Given a large enough population of voters whose utility functions satisfy certain statistical regularities, we show that voting rules such as the Borda rule, approval voting, and evaluative voting have a very high probability of selecting the social alternative which maximizes the utilitarian social welfare function. We also characterize the speed with which this probability approaches one as t...

We consider elections where the chair replaces either candidates or votes, with the goal of making a specific candidate win (constructive control) or lose (destructive control). We call this “replacement control” and study its computational complexity for several scoring rules (plurality, veto, Borda, k-approval), as well as for approval voting.

Diicult pattern recognition problems involving large class sets and noisy input can be solved by a multiple classiier system, which allows simultaneous use of arbitrary feature descriptors and classiication procedures. Independent decisions by each classiier can be combined by methods of the highest rank, Borda count, and logistic regression, resulting in substantial improvement in overall corr...

The Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem established that no non-trivial voting rule is strategy-proof, but does not mean all rules are equally susceptible to strategic manipulation. Over the past fifty years numerous approaches have been proposed compare manipulability of in terms probability manipulation, domains on which manipulation possible, complexity finding such a and others. In closely relate...
