Ageing lung cancer patients may be at increased risk of Cisplatin (Cp) nephrotoxicity, because of comorbidities leading to accelerated ageing of the kidneys. Therefore, the Cp-induced impairement of renal function was compared between no comorbidity (NC) and hypertension plus ischaemic heart disease (CD) patients or others having diabetes mellitus plus ischaemic heart disease (DMIH). In a preli...

BACKGROUND Nephrotoxicity associated with lead poisoning has been frequently reported in epidemiological studies, but the underlying mechanisms have not been fully described. OBJECTIVES We examined the role of erythrocytes, one of the major lead reservoirs, in lead-associated nephrotoxicity. METHODS AND RESULTS Co-incubation of lead-exposed human erythrocytes with HK-2 human renal proximal ...

CONTEXT Kidney is one of the vital organs maintaining homeostasis of body and thus dysfunction of kidney affects quality of life and health severely. Anticancer drugs, particularly chemotherapeutic agents, cause high toxicity leading kidney dysfunction and irreparable kidney injury. Therefore, attention has recently been paid to seeking out alternatives such as nature-based drugs that are effec...

BACKGROUND Oxidative and nitrosative stress have been involved in gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity. The purpose of this work was to study the effect of S-allylmercaptocysteine, a garlic derived compound, on gentamicin-induced oxidative and nitrosative stress and nephrotoxicity. In addition, the in vitro reactive oxygen species scavenging properties of S-allylmercaptocysteine were studied. RE...

INTRODUCTION Polimyxins were originally abandoned due to high rates of nephrotoxicity. However they have been recently reintroduced due to activity against carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative organisms. Recent literature suggests a lower rate of nephrotoxicity than historically reported. OBJECTIVE To determine the rate of polymixins-associated nephrotoxicity as defined by the RIFLE criteria. ...

Comparing nephrotoxicity of numerous drug analogs is impractical with chronic in vivo models. We devised a new cisplatin potentiation assay (CISPA) that sensitively detects renal injury as a serum creatinine increase when only one dose of test compound is followed by cisplatin. Reference nephrotoxins known to act on various sites in kidney tubules, glomeruli or renal papilla were all detected b...

Problem statement: The Amino glycoside antibiotics cause drug induced nephrotoxicity at therapeutic doses and thus limits the use clinically. Oxidative stress is one of the main reasons for the development of nephrotoxicity. Approach: In light of this the aim of the present study was to investigate the role of mitochondrial as well as post-mitochondrial oxidative stress in the development of Ge...

The incidence of acute renal failure, defined by the risk, injury, or failure criteria of the RIFLE criteria (risk, injury, failure, loss, and end-stage kidney disease), in 66 patients who received colistimethate sodium was 45%, and 21% of patients stopped therapy because of nephrotoxicity. The RIFLE criteria should be used in the future to allow for comparison of nephrotoxicity among studies.

Drugs are a common source of acute kidney injury. Compared with 30 years ago, the average patient today is older, has more comorbidities, and is exposed to more diagnostic and therapeutic procedures with the potential to harm kidney function. Drugs shown to cause nephrotoxicity exert their toxic effects by one or more common pathogenic mechanisms. Drug-induced nephrotoxicity tends to be more co...

UNLABELLED Renal insufficiency is prevalent among cancer patients and it poses a hindrance in using cisplatin. We sought to describe the baseline renal function of our patients who were considered "fit" for cisplatin, along with saline hydration and mannitol diuresis, and determine occurrence of nephrotoxicity during chemotherapy. METHODS A retrospective study from 2008 to 2012 of 100 patient...
