Fluid mixing controls many natural and industrial processes, including the spread of air pollution1, mass transfer and reactions in microfluidic devices2,3 and the detection of odours or other chemical signals4. Strongly nonlinear flows enhance mixing by chaotic advection5,6, stretching and folding7,8 fluid volumes. Though these processes have been studied in simple models9,10, stretching and f...

In this study we develop a modeling framework for predicting baroreceptor firing rate as a function of blood pressure. We test models within this framework both quantitatively and qualitatively using data from rats. The models describe three components: arterial wall deformation, stimulation of mechanoreceptors located in the BR nerve-endings, and modulation of the action potential frequency. T...

This article provides a fully analytical approach for nonlinear equilibrium path of rectangular sandwich plates. The core of structure is made of symmetric cross-ply laminated composite and the outer surfaces are piezoelectric actuators which perfectly bonded to inner core. The structure is subjected to electro-thermo-mechanical loads simultaneously. One side of plate is rested on Pasternak typ...

In this work, we show that the eigenvalues of the problem  (∆2 + V (x) + λ)u(x) = 0 x ∈ Ω u(x) = ∆u(x) = 0 x ∈ ∂Ω are generically simple in the set of C4 regular regions of Rn, n ≥ 2. In fact, we prove that there exists a residual set of regions C4 diffeomorphic to a given Ω such that all the eigenvalues for a supported plate equation are simple.

The ability to accurately and consistently predict deformation of deep foundation pit in civil engineering is required by the designer and manager in planning and conducting construction activities. Since deformation of deep foundation pit that belongs to a multi-variable nonlinear system evolution with time-varying is vague and uncertain, it is prone to a certain degree of prediction errors. T...

PURPOSE Coronary CT angiography (CCTA) is a high-resolution three-dimensional imaging technique for the evaluation of coronary arteries in suspected or confirmed coronary artery disease (CAD). Coregistration of serial CCTA scans would allow precise superimposition of images obtained at two different points in time, which could aid in recognition of subtle changes and precise monitoring of coron...

With the increasing complexity of photo-realistic scenes, the question of building and placing objects in three-dimensional scenes is becoming ever more di cult. While the question of placement of rigid objects has captured the attention of researchers in the past, this work presents an intuitive and interactive scheme to properly place deformable objects with the aid of free-form deformation t...

We propose a method to predict the value of the external strain where a generic amorphous solid will fail by a plastic response (i.e., an irreversible deformation), solely on the basis of measurements of the nonlinear elastic moduli. While usually considered fundamentally different, with the elastic properties describing reversible phenomena and plastic failure epitomizing irreversible behavior...

Bridges are an essential part of the ground transportation system. Health monitoring is fundamentally important for the safety and service life of bridges. A large amount of structural information is obtained from various sensors using sensing technology, and the data processing has become a challenging issue. To improve the prediction accuracy of bridge structure deformation based on data mini...

The Maxwell-Lame equations governing the principal components of Cauchy stress for plane deformations are well known in the context of photo-elasticity, and they form a pair of coupled first-order hyperbolic partial differential equations when the deformation geometry is known. In the present paper this theme is developed for nonlinear isotropic elastic materials by supplementing the (Lagrangea...
