Machery suggests that the concept of "concept" is too heterogeneous to serve as a "natural kind" for scientific explanation, so cognitive science should do without concepts. I second the suggestion and propose substituting, in place of concepts, inborn and acquired sensorimotor category-detectors and category-names combined into propositions that define and describe further categories.

The efficient selection of relevant extents is an important issue for investigation in formal concept analysis. The notion of stability has been adopted for this reasoning. We present three different methods for evaluation of stability and we summarize the comparative remarks.

Concept maps have been widely put to educational uses. But concept maps in the past were limited in their assessment standards. Some only take concept nodes into consideration; other evaluation criteria use concept nodes as the basis, with relation links playing a minor role. To address this problem, this study proposes a new style of concept map, called weighted concept map, which assigns a we...

This study examined the effect that correlational attributes that promote concept formation gives to mere expsure effect for prototypes. Using the mere exposure (e.g., Zajonc, 1968) and the concept formation paradigms (e.g., Barsalou et al., 1999), Matsuda and Kusumi (2002, 2003) elucidated three points concerning. First, it was found out that concept formation with repeated exposure builds a p...

The paper presents results on factorization by similarity of fuzzy concept lattices with hedges. Factorization of fuzzy concept lattices including a fast way to compute the factor lattice was presented in our earlier papers. The basic idea is to have, instead of a whole fuzzy concept lattice, its factor lattice. The factor lattice results by factorizing the original fuzzy concept lattice by a s...

I argue that Vygotsky’s theory of concept formation (1986) is a powerful framework within which to explore how an individual at university level constructs a new mathematical concept. In particular, this theory is able to bridge the divide between an individual’s mathematical knowledge and the body of socially sanctioned mathematical knowledge. It can also be used to explain how idiosyncratic u...
