We report the emergence of vancomycin resistance in a patient colonized with a vanA-containing, vanRS-negative isolate of Enterococcus faecium which was initially vancomycin susceptible. This is a previously undescribed mechanism of drug resistance with diagnostic and therapeutic implications.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE In 2007, an outbreak of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) occurred at Taipei Medical University, Wan Fang Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan. The aim of this study was to characterize the mechanism of glycopeptide resistance and to investigate the genetic relatedness among isolates of VRE. METHODS Between May and October 2007, bacterial isolates from 16 patients identified a...
Presence of glycopeptide-encoding plasmids in enterococcal isolates from food and humans in Denmark.
Enterococci and especially glycopeptides-resistant enterococci (GRE) are a growing concern due to their ability to cause infections in hospitals. Transmission of antimicrobial resistance between reservoirs such as animals, meat, and humans are in most cases linked to transmission of mobile genetic elements (MGE) such as plasmids and transposons. Presence of MGE was tested in all GRE isolated fr...
A clinical isolate of Enterococcus faecium that contains a chromosomally encoded vanA gene cluster, Tn1546::IS1251, transferred vancomycin resistance to the plasmid-free strain Enterococcus faecalis JH2-2 during filter matings. Hybridization of a vanHAXY probe to SmaI restriction-digested genomic DNA separated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis showed that the vanA gene cluster was located on ...
Colonization of the human and animal intestinal tract with potential pathogenic bacteria is correlated with the risk of contamination of food products. The current study analyzed the prevalence of Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli O157H7 in ground meat in Ilam, Iran. Both index organisms were identified following standard food microbiological methods. For E. faecalis, the susceptibilit...
Objectives: To identify the prevalence of enteroccoci species in clinical specimens, to determine their susceptibilities to some antibiotics for treatment, and to detect the vanA-specific 377-bp fragment from the genomic DNA of all vancomycin resistant enteroccoci (VRE). Methodology: One hundred thirty seven isolates of enterococci species were obtained from samples of patients who were referre...
In 2007, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) established the VA Nursing Academy (VANA), a 5-year, $60-million pilot program funding 15 partnerships between schools of nursing and local VA health care facilities nationwide, to expand nursing faculty, enhance clinical faculty development, increase nursing student enrollment, and promote educational innovations. VA is an ideal setting for educ...
Staphylococcus aureus is most frequently isolated pathogen causing bloodstream infections, skin and soft tissue infections and pneumonia. Recently, S. aureus have evolved resistance to both synthetic and traditional antibiotics. This study was carried out to isolate pathogenic S. aureus from post-operative pus sample, and VRSA was identified by evaluation of resistance patterns using convention...
