Individuals, typically, are exposed to mixtures of environmental xenobiotics affecting multiple organs and acting through different xenosensors and pathways in species and cell-type specific manners. 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and α-endosulfan are Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and endocrine disruptors which act through different xenosensors and accumulate in the liver. Ou...
Five species of macroalgae, namely Sargassum wightii, Padina tetrastromatica, Ulva lactuca, Caulerpa racemosa and Gracilaria edulis collected from three sampling sites, viz. Harbour Beach (site 1), Tharuvaikkulam 2) Hare Island 3), situated along the Thoothukudi region Gulf Mannar were analysed for 17 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to assess the...
A bioassay of technical-grade endosulfan for possible carcinogenicity was conducted using Osborne-Mendel rats and B6C3F1 mice. Endosulfan was administered in the feed, at either of two concentrations, to groups of 50 male and 50 female animals of each species. The time-weighted average high and low dietary concentrations of endosulfan were, respectively, 952 and 408 ppm for the male rats, and 4...
Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) such as DDT and DDE have been detected in the surface 0.2m of Vertisols in the lower Namoi Valley of north western New South Wales, Australia even though they have not been applied to crops since 1982. However, their presence in the deeper soil horizons has not been investigated. The objective of this study was to determine if OCPs were present to a depth of 1.2...
In the present study, endosulfan degrading capability of four bacterial monocultures (RCE-2, GCE-4, GCE-5 and JCE-4) and two bacterial mixed-cultures (GCE345 and GCC134) was investigated in terms of treatment duration and culture volume, using soil slurry medium. Among the bacterial mono-cultures, JCE-4 was found to be most efficient with 16, 33, 60 and 65% of endosulfan (α + β-isomers) degrada...
The present paper deals with the effect of endosulfan on Ascorbic acid content in the alimentary canal of Heteropneustes fossilis. This fish exposed so sub lethal concentration of endosulfan for a period of one month. The results revealed that the ascorbic acid content of alimentary canal was decreased in intoxicated fishes.
Pesticides are major contaminating chemicals in agriculture environment and a hazard to exposed population. These compounds are absorbed by inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact. Their bioavailability in the individuals can lead to a variety of metabolic and systemic dysfunctions, and even outright disease states. Therefore, the tremendous usage of pesticides has promoted toxicological stud...
This study investigated the levels of pesticides and metabolites in vegetables from major markets in Dar es Salaam city, Tanzania. Samples of fresh cabbage, spinach, and onions from the markets were analysed for pesticide residues. Extraction was performed using acetone followed by dichloromethane : cyclohexane mixture and the extracts were cleaned up using Florisil. The compounds were determin...
A simple and efficient method for simultaneous gas chromatographic (GC) determination of 18 organochlorine pesticides [tecnazene, hexachlorobenzene, alpha-benzenehexachloride (BHC), pentachloronitrobenzene (PCNB), gamma-BHC, heptachlor, aldrin, methyl pentachlorophenyl sulfide, beta-BHC, delta-BHC, heptachlor epoxide, alpha-endosulfan, trans-chlorodane, cis-chlorodane, p,p'-dichlorodiphenyl dic...
