In this study, a Tabu Search (TS) approach to the parallel machine scheduling problem is presented. The problem considered consists of a set of independent jobs to be scheduled on a number of parallel processors to minimize total tardiness. Several surveys on parallel machine scheduling with due date related objectives [1, 2, 3] reveal that the NP-hard nature of the problem renders it a challen...

We consider the uniform parallel machine scheduling problem with the objective of minimizing maximum lateness. We show that an extension of the EDD rule to a uniform parallel machine setting yields a maximum lateness value which does not exceed the optimal value by more than pmax, where pmax is the maximum job processing time. c © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Parallel machine scheduling problems concern the scheduling of n jobs on m machines to minimize some function of the job completion times. If preemption is not allowed, then most problems are not only NP-hard, but also very hard from a practical point of view. In this paper, we show that strong and fast linear programming lower bounds can be computed for an important class of machine scheduling...

we study the nonpreemptive parallel machines scheduling problem where some of the machines are planned to be shutdown. We apply LPT algorithm to the problem and analyze its performance. Our analysis shows that the makespan of the LPT schedule is bounded by twice the optimum makespan if no more than half of the machines are allowed to be shutdown simultaneously. We also show that this bound ls t...

We consider a scheduling problem in which n independent and simultaneously available jobs are to be processed on m parallel machines. The jobs are delivered in batches and the delivery date of a batch is equal to the completion time of the last job in the batch. The delivery cost depends on the number of deliveries. The objective is to minimize the sum of the total #ow time and delivery cost. W...

This paper considers identical parallel machines scheduling problem with past-sequence-dependent setup times, deteriorating jobs and learning effects, in which the actual processing time of a job on each machine is given as a function of the processing times of the jobs already processed and its scheduled position on the corresponding machine. In addition, the setup time of a job on each machin...
