Single walled carbon nanotube shows excellent chemical and physical properties and it has been extensively explored for novel applications. It has been shown that single walled carbon nanotube can be used to improve sensitivity of sensors such as bio sensors, gas sensors and mechanicals sensor by its unique properties. As a mechanical sensor, a mechanical force deforms the single walled carbon ...

This paper presents development of a wearable force sensor system for human dynamics analysis. Forces and moments are detected by combining responses from eight load cells fabricated on a parallel connection foundation. Finite element method was used for designing preliminary mechanical structures and simulating the mechanical stresses and strains in the load cells. Sensitivity of the load cell...

This paper identifies a new, potentially low cost, non-contact, frequency domain strain torque sensor utilising SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) Technology for surface strain measurement. The sensor has a short axial length making it flexible in terms of integration into a variety of applications, encompassing both static and dynamic measurement. The paper presents a technical description of the res...

(Abstract) The health monitoring of smart structures in civil engineering is becoming more and more important as in-situ structural monitoring would greatly reduce structure life-cycle costs and improve reliability. The distributed strain and temperature sensing is highly desired in large structures where strain and temperature at over thousand points need to be measured simultaneously. It is d...

A strain sensor tag with screen printed antenna for seamless integration with clothing is examined to provide a wireless method for monitoring of human body movements. The strain response of the tag is investigated in air and on human body. While the results indicate strong antenna-body interaction, the strain response of the tag is found to be a monotonic function of the strain.

Extremely stretchable self-healing strain sensors based on conductive hydrogels are successfully fabricated. The strain sensor can achieve autonomic self-heal electrically and mechanically under ambient conditions, and can sustain extreme elastic strain (1000%) with high gauge factor of 1.51. Furthermore, the strain sensors have good response, signal stability, and repeatability under various h...

In and post a fire event, an accurate and real-time evaluation and monitoring of a structure’s performance can assist firefighters for efficient survivor rescuing, which significantly improve the fire rescuing safety both for fire fighters and the trapped survivors. However, due to the lack of durable sensors, the structural performance of steel structures in fire conditions is challenging to b...

Industrialized nations have made huge investments in civil infrastructure and attention must be given to its proper maintenance. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and Damage Detection (DD) strategies have been developed by many researchers in support of efficient operation and maintenance of civil infrastructure. Smart wireless sensor networks are promising in that they have the potential to d...

The accelerating fields (e. g. centrifugal acceleration and constant acceleration) can change the physical performance of nano-sensors significantly. Herein, a new size-dependent model is developed to investigate the scale-dependent dynamic behavior of nanowire-fabricated sensor operated in an accelerating field. The scale-dependent equation of motion is developed by employing a consolidation o...

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors based on the wavelength division multiplexing technology are ideally suited for structural health monitoring. In many applications, it is desirable to form several arrays of optical fiber sensors to monitor the response of structures. In the present study, we constructed an improved FBG sensor system using a wavelength-swept fiber laser which exhibits high outp...
