OBJECTIVE When performing transcanal myringoplasty under a microscope, the total circumference of the perforation can be difficult to confirm in patients where the external ear canal is narrow and/or protruded. In such patients, a retroauricular incision approach is usually used. However, we have developed a transcanal endoscopic myringoplasty procedure, and the microscopic and endoscopic views...
Background: Traumatic tympanic membrane (TM) perforation is a common injury of the ear with a high rate of spontaneous healing if the patients strictly adhere to water precautions. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors involved in the spontaneous healing of traumatic TM perforations in order to ascertain the best treatment plan including observation, paper patch and finally sur...
Perforation of the tympanic membrane is a common war injury, especially after explosions. Such perforations will normally heal spontaneously under favourable conditions. A small number in whom the defect persists will benefit from closure by myringoplasty. Thirty-four such cases underwent operative repair and were compared with an equal number due to other causes.
OBJECTIVES To compare the efficiency of the subannular T-tube (SAT) vs that of the repetitive transtympanic Duravent tube (TTT) in children with recurrent or chronic otitis media (OM) with effusion or tympanic membrane retraction and to establish which population would be more likely to benefit from TTTs vs SATs. DESIGN Medical record review. SETTING Tertiary care pediatric center. PATIEN...
OBJECTIVES There is a marked diversity in the reported success rates for achieving an intact tympanic membrane following tympanoplasty. Controversy exists about the factors thought to influence surgical outcome. These facts have important implications for the selection of patients who would benefit the most. This study reviews the factors thought to determine the anatomical and functional succe...
OBJECTIVE: Perforations of the tympanic membrane are treated with various surgical techniques and materials, all of which have advantages and disadvantages. Although autologous temporalis fascia is most often used to repair a perforated tympanic membrane, a fat graft can also be used, and fat myringoplasty (FM) is a simple and cost-effective technique. The aim of our study was to determine the ...
