Mouse bone marrow-derived Lin(-)-Sca-1(+) endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) has pluripotent abilities such as supporting neovascularization. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor 1 (VEGFR1) (Flt1) recognizes various VEGF isoforms and is critically implicated in a wide range of physiological and pathological settings, including vasculogenesis. Mouse EPC expresses two isoforms of VEG...

Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) contribute to postnatal neovascularization. Risk factors for coronary artery disease reduce the number of EPCs in humans. Since EPC apoptosis might be a potential mechanism to regulate the number of EPCs, we investigated the effects of oxidative stress and HMG-CoA-reductase inhibitors (statins) on EPC apoptosis. Atorvastatin, mevastatin, or VEGF prevented EPC...

CHANGES IN VASCULAR MORPHOLOGY and function with increasing age clearly are significant contributors to age-related increases in cardiovascular disease (CVD). In addition, the presence of CVD risk factors, such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and smoking, have been shown to cause endothelial dysfunction, an early marker of atherosclerosis and CVD. Regular physical activity is not onl...

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of two different intensities of physical activity on circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) in healthy young women. For this purpose, 15 female students from volunteers were randomly selected via questionnaire (group 1: mean age 22 ±1/8 years, BMI 20/81±1/91 kg/m2, n = 8. group 2: mean age 21 ±1/5 years, BMI 20/38 ± 1/66 kg/m2, ...

RATIONALE Endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) survival and function in the injured myocardium is adversely influenced by hostile microenvironment such as ischemia, hypoxia, and inflammatory response, thereby compromising full benefits of EPC-mediated myocardial repair. OBJECTIVE We hypothesized that interleukin-10 (IL-10) modulates EPC biology leading to enhanced survival and function after tra...

AIMS Circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPC), involved in endothelial regeneration, neovascularisation, and determination of prognosis in cardiovascular disease can be characterised with functional assays or using immunofluorescence and flow cytometry. Combinations of markers, including CD34+KDR+ or CD133+KDR+, are used. This approach, however may not consider all characteristics of EPC....

Two cationic phospholipid derivatives with asymmetric hydrocarbon chains were synthesized: ethyl esters of oleoyldecanoyl-ethylphosphatidylcholine (C18:1/C10-EPC) and stearoyldecanoyl-ethylphosphatidylcholine (C18:0/C10-EPC). The former was 50 times more effective as a DNA transfection agent (human umbilical artery endothelial cells) than the latter, despite their similar chemical structure and...

Stable enzyme precipitate coatings (EPCs) with high enzyme loading were employed to develop a sensitive and reliable detection protocol, termed EPC-linked aptamer assay (EPC-LAA). EPC-LAA achieved the limit of detection to be 0.5 ng per mL of thrombin (13.5 pM), and maintained a reasonably stable detection signal even after storing all the reagents at 40 °C for 66 days.

Rheumatic autoimmune disorders are characterized by a sustained pro-inflammatory microenvironment associated with impaired function of endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) and concomitant vascular defects. Guanylate binding protein-1 (GBP-1) is a marker and intracellular regulator of the inhibition of proliferation, migration and invasion of endothelial cells induced by several pro-inflammatory c...

Endothelial cell damage and impaired angiogenesis substantially contribute to the progression of chronic renal failure (CRF). The effect of endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) treatment on the progression of CRF is yet to be determined. We performed 5/6 nephrectomy to induce CRF in C57BL/6 mice. EPCs were isolated from bone marrow, grown in conditioned medium, and characterized with surface marke...
