Cells from the retinas of cattle eyes have been growing continuously in tissue culture for more than one year in our laboratory. The culture medium used is defined as modified 199, with 20 per cent calf serum. The glass surfaces of Blake bottles, toxin bottles, cover slips, and synthetic membranes provide the substrate for these monolayer cultures. The cell population doubles every 7 to 14 days...
A new bacteriological medium Modified Fish Meal Extract agar was tested for its efficacy in promoting the growth of P aeruginosa normally encountered in clinical specimens. 50 specimens each of sputum, pus and urine samples were cultured on Modified Fish Meal Extract Agar and the results were compared with normal Nutrient agar and Blood agar. There was 100% conformity in the results compared wi...
giardia lamblia cysts were isolated from fecal samples of 55 symptomatic and asymptomatic patients with giardiasis. the cysts were harvested and purified using the sucrose gradient method. is the excystation of g. lamblia was obtained by treating them with hci (0.01n)', then they were transferred on to modified tyi-s-33 medium. out of 55 stool samples 17 cases were excysted with a rate of ...
introduction acetic acid bacteria are large group of obligate aerobic gram negative bacteria with the ability to oxidize ethanol to acetic acid (1). they are widely distributed in natural habitats and classified in family acetobacteraceae. members of this family are useful in industrial production of vinegar(2). acetic acid bacteria (aab) can use substrates as glucose, ethanol, lactate or glyc...
The chromosome number of the Krebs-3 ascites carcinoma maintained in Swiss mice was found to be grouped about a modal number of 78-79. After in vitro culture in medium No. 858 (modified) containing 10 per cent calf serum, primary cultures showed a shift to a smaller number of chromosomes. This medium when used for originating single-cell cultures favored the selection of cells with a modal chro...
Transgrow medium was developed by Martin and Lester (1971) as a combined transport and culture medium for N. gonorrhoeae and N. meningitidis. It has since become widely used in the United States, where it is considered to be an important aid in the diagnosis of gonorrhoea in patients attending clinics which are remote from a laboratory. Certain of the ingredients of Transgrow are difficult to o...
The addition of 5 microgram of clindamycin per ml to a modified Todd-Hewitt growth medium permitted the ready enumeration of Eikenella corrodens from deep periodontal lesions because it allowed differential growth amongst the periodontal pocket gram-negative microaerophilic-anaerobic flora, maximized the numbers of E. corrodens in such culture, and inhibited the growth of most of the other conf...

Modified brucella broth medium was used to study the growth of Helicobacter pylori at varied pHs and partial pressures of oxygen and to determine the effect of urea on culture pH. Our findings suggested that the pHs of the media remained stable with or without urea and that H. pylori showed facultative acidophilism and obligate microaerophilism.
