In the ageing individual, the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) accelerates with cell senescence. Depending on the heritability of the underlying processes that determine net ROS levels, this may influence ageing per se and its evolutionary direction and rate of change. In order to understand the inheritance and evolution of net ROS levels in free-ranging lizards, we used flow cytomet...

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been implicated in a variety of age-related diseases, including multiple cardiovascular disorders. However, translation of ROS scavengers (antioxidants) into the clinic has not been successful. These antioxidants grossly reduce total levels of cellular ROS including ROS that participate in physiological signaling. In this review, we challenge the traditional a...

Increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are associated with clinical varicoceles; however, its correlation with varicocele grade and testis size is unknown. In our study, seminal ROS levels showed significant correlation with left varicocele grade and significantly elevated seminal ROS levels were seen in men with left varicocele grade 2 and 3 compared to grade 1.

Owing to their fast diffusion, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are important tissue signalling components. High levels of ROS are generally considered as deleterious to cells. In vivo experiments in the Drosophila hematopoietic organ now challenge this view by showing that high ROS levels are intrinsically required to prime myeloid-like progenitors to differentiate.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced by host phagocytes and exert antimicrobial actions against a broad range of pathogens. The observable antimicrobial actions of ROS are highly dependent on experimental conditions. This perspective reviews recent controversies regarding ROS in Salmonella-phagocyte interactions and attempts to reconcile conflicting observations from different laboratories.

In a longitudinal study over a period of 21 months, we demonstrated that seminal reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels are independent of sperm concentration, motility, and abstinence duration within a healthy sperm donor, although some variations were observed in ROS levels. We suggest that fluctuation in seminal ROS values may be related to physiologic or transient changes in spermatogenesis.

Introduction: D-galactose (D-gal) is well known as an appropriate agent to induced aging effects in the in vivo and in vitro models. In the present study, we selected crocin, the main constituent of Crocus sativus L. (Saffron), against D-gal cytotoxicity in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. Materials and Methods:  Cells were pretreated with crocin (25-500 µM) for 24 h and then expos...

Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive neuronal dysfunction. Growing evidence has shown that oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease. Correspondingly, the current study evaluated the protective effect of topiramate in 6-hydroxydopamine induced oxidative stress and apoptosis in PC12 cells...

Microglia are the resident immune cells of the brain and play major roles in central nervous system development, maintenance, and disease. Brain insults cause microglia to proliferate, migrate, and transform into one or more activated states. Classical M1 activation triggers the production of proinflammatory factors such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β (IL-1β), nitric oxide, and reac...
