Quasi-hierarchical Powell-Sabin splines are C-continuous quadratic splines defined on a locally refined hierarchical triangulation. They admit a compact representation in a normalized B-spline basis. We prove that the quasi-hierarchical basis is in general weakly Lpstable, but for a broad class of hierarchical triangulations it is even strongly Lp-stable.

Successful implementation of the global poliomyelitis eradication program raises the problem of vaccination against poliomyelitis in the posteradication era. One of the options under consideration envisions completely stopping worldwide the use of the Sabin vaccine. This strategy is based on the assumption that the natural circulation of attenuated strains and their derivatives is strictly limi...
BACKGROUND Poliovirus rapidly evolves by nucleic acid substitutions and genetic recombination with other polioviruses and non-polio enteroviruses. Evolving oral poliovaccine can rapidly revert to neurovirulence and undergo antigenic alterations. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the threat of vaccine-derived poliovirus (1-15% divergence from the respective Sabin strain) for a poliomyelitis-free populati...
BACKGROUND Sensitive poliovirus surveillance to detect vaccine-derived-polioviruses will continue to increase in importance. OBJECTIVE Isolating and identifying poliovirus strains from children of pediatrics age in Nigeria. METHODS A total of 120 fecal samples were randomly collected from children under the age of five who presented with acute flaccid paralysis. Samples were tested by tissu...
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES The poliovirus serotype identification and intratypic differentiation by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) assay is suitable for serotype mixtures but not for intratypic mixtures of wild and vaccine poliovirus strains. This study was undertaken to develop wild poliovirus 1 and 3 (WPV1 and WPV3) specific rRT-PCR assays for use. METHODS ...
Over 400 million people living in the world's poorest developing nations are infected with hookworms, mostly of the genus Necator americanus. A bivalent human hookworm vaccine composed of the Necator americanus Glutathione S-Transferase-1 (Na-GST-1) and the Necator americanus Aspartic Protease-1 (Na-APR-1 (M74)) is currently under development by the Sabin Vaccine Institute Product Development P...
The demonstration with the electron microscope that the nerve contains a fibrous component, probably axonic, the so called neurotubules (De Robertis and Schmitt (1)) has led to the supposition that these structures might be involved in the transfer of virus particles through the axon. This hypothesis was first tested with the poliomyelitis virus (2). In experimentally infected monkeys, neurotub...
