Salmonella typhimurium LT2 excreted under certain conditions an antibiotic substance designated typhimuricin. It is suggested that the LT2 "cryptic" plasmid is involved in its production and in the immunity to it. Preliminary characterization of typhimuricin is presented.

Thirteen Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium and one Salmonella enterica serotype Heidelberg strain resistant to expanded-spectrum cephalosporins were isolated from October 2000 to February 2001 from infants with gastroenteritis in Iasi, Romania. In all but one serotype Typhimurium isolate, resistance was due to the production of a CMY-2 cephalosporinase encoded by a nonconjugative plasmid...

The stationary-phase-inducible sigma factor, sigma(S) (RpoS), is the master regulator of the general stress response in Salmonella and is required for virulence in mice. rpoS mutants can frequently be isolated from highly passaged laboratory strains of Salmonella: We examined the rpoS status of 116 human clinical isolates of Salmonella, including 41 Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi strains is...

Outbred mice were vaccinated with various artificial Salmonella vaccines and subsequently challenged intraperitoneally with graded doses of virulent Salmonella typhimurium. The Salmonella vaccines used were: (i) octasaccharide, obtained by hydrolysis of the O-antigenic polysaccharide chain of S. typhimurium strain SH 4809 with phage P22-associated endo-rhamnosidase and covalently linked to eith...

Salmonella typhimurium was invariably isolated from our J strain murine leukosis. Immunization of D103 mice with either inactivated Salmonella typhimurium or the cell-free extract of leukosis inhibited the transplantation of leukosis. The adoptive immunization of D103 mice with spleen cells of Strong A mice immunized with either Salmonella or the cell-free extract of leukosis inhibited the tran...

The presence of class 1 integrons was investigated in 156 epidemiologically unrelated Salmonella Typhimurium isolates. Of these 156 isolates, 70 were of definitive phage type DT104 and 86 were strains of various phage type, RDNC and untypable, designated here as non-DT104 strains. Integrons were found in 47 of DT104 isolates (67.1%), while in all strains with characteristic pentaresistance (R-t...

Background and Objective: Salmonellosis is one of the most important zoonotic diseases; most of the infections caused by the consumption of contaminated food is caused by this bacterium. During the last decades, the resistance of Salmonella isolates to conventional antibiotics has increased, which is a global health problem. The objective of this study was to investigate Salmonella serotypes in...

Dry heat was used to inactivate Salmonella newington, Salmonella typhimurium, Salmonella anatum, Salmonella kentucky, Salmonella cubana, Salmonella seftenberg, Salmonella thompson, and Salmonella tennessee in corn flour at 10 and 15% moisture. The flour was spray inoculated at 10(5) Salmonella cells per g and then stored at 49 degrees C (120 degrees F); viable Salmonella cells were counted on T...

Forty-nine cell envelope proteins of Salmonella typhimurium SL1344 have been identified by microsequencing and assigned to a two-dimensional reference map. Ten of the sequenced proteins appear to be novel. Several others closely match currently hypothetical proteins or proteins found in other bacteria but not previously reported in salmonellae.
