A reservoir model of a Recent steady-state sedimentary system in which the reduced sulfur and oxidized sulfur reservoirs were coupled with the oxidized carbon and reduced carbon reservoirs was constructed. The time curve of the sulfur isotope ratios of the sedimentary sulfate reservoir was used to drive the model back to the beginning of Cambrian time (600 million years ago), producing the rese...

Sulfur is both crucial to life and a potential threat to health. While colonic sulfur metabolism mediated by eukaryotic cells is relatively well studied, much less is known about sulfur metabolism within gastrointestinal microbes. Sulfated compounds in the colon are either of inorganic (e.g., sulfates, sulfites) or organic (e.g., dietary amino acids and host mucins) origin. The most extensively...

Volatile sulfur compounds production by eight strains of Brevibacterium linens isolated from cheeses was demonstrated: methanethiol, dimethyldisulfide, and 2,3,4-trithiapentane. Four of these strains also produced S-methylthioacetate, an important aroma component of smear-coated cheeses. It is the first demonstrated microbiological production of a thioester.

It has been observed that the sulfonate portion of alkyl benzene sulfonate (ABS) will undergo microbial attack in certain pure and mixed cultures if an energy source, such as glucose, is available. The evidence for this is provided by the stoichiometric relationship between the reduction of ABS concentration and the appearance of inorganic sulfur compounds.

Tungsten oxide nanoclusters supported highly ordered mesoporous SBA-15 material has been successfully synthesized in a single step using a non-ionic surfactant as a template and used for the selective oxidation of sulfur compounds, giving excellent yields at room temperature with exceptional catalyst recyclability.

The interaction between two different materials can present novel phenomena that are quite different from the physical properties observed when each material stands alone. Strong electronic correlations, such as magnetism and superconductivity, can be produced as the result of enhanced Coulomb interactions between electrons. Two-dimensional materials are powerful candidates to search for the no...

Introduction The deep sea hydrothermal vents are one of the most unusual habitats found on earth (review in Humphris et al. 1995). Vents are surrounded by a dense community which is supported by primary production through chemoautotrophic bacteria. Most of this fauna is composed of sessile animals that harbor bacteria as intracellular symbionts. Such geothermally-driven communities are dependen...

Desulfotomaculum copahuensis strain CINDEFI1 is a novel spore-forming sulfate-reducing bacterium isolated from the Copahue volcano area, Argentina. Here, we present its draft genome in which we found genes related with the anaerobic respiration of sulfur compounds similar to those present in the Copahue environment.

The objective of this research was to investigate whether a preferential stimulation of microorganisms in anaerobically digested biosolids can occur after dewatering and if it can lead to pathogen indicator regrowth and odor generation upon storage. Laboratory incubation simulating biosolids storage indicates that both odorant generation, based on total volatile organic sulfur compound concentr...

Effect of electron-beam irradiation on the quality of ready-to-eat (RTE) turkey ham was studied. Turkey hams were purchased from local stores and sliced into 0.5 cm-thick pieces and vacuum packaged. The ham samples were randomly separated into three groups and irradiated at 0, 1, or 2 kGy, and stored at 4 °C for up to 14 days. Volatiles, color, TBARS values and sensory characteristics were dete...
