The nucleotide sequence of 5S rRNA from Mycoplasma capricolum is more similar to that of the gram-positive bacteria than that of the gram-negative bacteria. The presence of two copies of rRNA genes in M. capricolum genome has been demonstrated. The two different rRNA gene clusters have been cloned in E. coli plasmid vectors and analyzed for the rRNA gene organizations, demonstrating that the ge...

Activation of ras proto-oncogenes occurs frequently in vivo in chemically induced rodent tumours, including rat hepatomas induced by aflatoxin B1. This study examines the in vitro activation of a human ras gene by this mycotoxin. A plasmid containing the human Ha-ras proto-oncogene, together with a neomycin resistance gene (pECneo), was incubated in vitro with a microsomal system generating afl...

Hyphomonas neptunium is a marine prosthecate alpha-proteobacterium currently classified as a member of the order 'Rhodobacterales'. Although this classification is supported by 16S rRNA gene sequence phylogeny, 23S rRNA gene sequence analysis, concatenated ribosomal proteins, HSP70 and EF-Tu phylogenies all support classifying Hyphomonas neptunium as a member of the Caulobacterales instead. The...

Kinins exert cardioprotective effects via 2 G-protein-coupled receptors, B1 and B2. Using B1 kinin receptor gene knockout mice (B1-/-), we tested the hypotheses that the B1 receptor plays an important role in preservation of cardiac function, whereas lack of B1 may accelerate cardiac remodeling and dysfunction after myocardial infarction, and that B2 receptors may compensate for lack of B1, whe...

BACKGROUND Kinins play an important role in regulation of pain and hyperalgesia after tissue injury and inflammation by activating two types of G-protein-coupled receptors, the kinin B1 and B2 receptors. It is generally accepted that the B2 receptor is constitutively expressed, whereas the B1 receptor is induced in response to inflammation. However, little is known about the regulatory effects ...

The phylogeny and general relatedness of prokaryotes is determined by comparisons of the sequences of rRNA genes, most commonly the 16S rRNA gene. Comparisons between other gene sequences have been used for this purpose and some have supported conclusions from 16S rRNA genes while others have not. In this study, 13 new magnetospirilla were phylogenetically characterized using the sequences of t...

The 100 bp sequence from the beginning of the 16S rRNA gene of archaebacterium Halobacterium halobium and the adjacent 800 bp upstream sequence were determined. Four long (80 bp) direct repeats were found in the region preceeding the structural gene of the 16S rRNA. These repeats are proposed to constitute the promoter region of the rRNA operon of H. halobium.

Using the multicopy B1 gene and AF146527 element for the amplification of Toxoplasma gondii DNA raises the issue of reliable quantification for clinical diagnosis. We applied relative quantification to reference strains using the single-copy P30 gene as a reference. According to the parasite type, the copy numbers for the B1 gene and AF146527 element were found to be 5 to 12 and 4 to 8 times lo...
