Social and ecological factors are important in shaping sexual dimorphism in Anthropoidea, but there is also a tendency for body-size dimorphism and canine dimorphism to increase with increased body size (Rensch's rule) (Rensch: Evolution Above the Species Level. London: Methuen, 1959.) Most ecologist interpret Rensch's rule to be a consequence of social and ecological selective factors that cov...

Canine malignant melanomas are highly aggressive and fatal neoplasms. In the present report, 21 drugs that target specific signalling pathways were screened for their growth inhibitory activity on three canine malignant melanoma cell lines. The proteasome inhibitor bortezomib inhibited the growth of these cell lines. The growth inhibitory properties of bortezomib were then examined using nine c...

Human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are known to possess the potential for multiple differentiations abilities in vitro and in vivo. In canine system, studying stem cell therapy is important, but so far, stem cells from canine were not identified and characterized. In this study, we successfully isolated and characterized MSCs from the canine umbilical cord and its ...

Various chemotherapies and radiation therapies are useful for killing cancer cells mainly by inducing DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). Uncovering the molecular mechanisms of DSB repair processes is crucial for developing next-generation radiotherapies and chemotherapeutics for human and animal cancers. XRCC4 plays a critical role in Ku-dependent nonhomologous DNA-end joining (NHEJ) in human cel...

A canine model of terminal aneurysms using a venous pouch surgical technique is described. This model mimics the anatomy and hemodynamics of some types of carotid and basilar tip aneurysms. This technique produces aneurysms 15 x 21 mm in size. The aneurysms have been used to investigate the hemodynamics and treatment of terminal aneurysms.

Background. Recent studies have reported that asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction (ALVD) in humans is characterized by early neurohumoral activation. Specifically, atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) and norepinephrine are activated without activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). The current study describes hemodynamic and renal function associated with this neurohumora...

Pipelined NLP systems have largely been superseded by end-to-end neural modeling, yet nearly all commonly-used models still require an explicit tokenization step. While recent approaches based on data-derived subword lexicons are less brittle than manually engineered tokenizers, these techniques not equally suited to languages, and the use of any fixed vocabulary may limit a model's ability ada...

Antistasin is a 119-amino acid protein initially isolated from salivary glands of the Mexican leech, Haementeria officinalis, that exhibits potent anticoagulant properties resulting from selective inhibition of blood coagulation factor Xa. The comparative antithrombotic efficacies of recombinant antistasin (rATS), standard heparin (Hep), and aspirin (ASA) administered adjunctly with recombinant...
