Coarctation of the aorta is a common cardiovascular disorder with an unknown etiology. In the preductal type, blood flows from a patent ductus into the distal aorta. When the coarctation is juxtaductal or postductal, blood flows to the lower extremities by way of the subclavian arteries and collaterals. Plain films may show the reverse sign in postductal coarctation. Arteriography is the gold s...

The ideal surgical approach is unclear in adult patients with coarctation of the aorta that is associated with other cardiovascular pathologies that require intervention. Standard median sternotomy allows simultaneous, coronary revascularization surgery, valve replacement and repair of aortic coarctation. However the collateral circulation and the anatomy of the mammary arteries must be determi...

Aortic coarctation is a congenital malformation of the aorta usually diagnosed and corrected early in life. Long-term survival is exceptional in patients with untreated aortic coarctation. In this case report, we present a late diagnosis of aortic coarctation in a 72-year-old female. Our patient was relatively asymptomatic until she presented with exertional dyspnea and fatigue in her seventh d...

Coarctation of the aorta is an uncommon cause of cerebral hemorrhage in the full- or near-term infant. The clinical, radiologic, and neurologic findings of four infants with aortic coarctation and cerebral hemorrhage are presented. In all four infants, cerebral hemorrhage was associated with only moderate elevation of systolic blood pressure (90-110 mmHg).

SUMMARY: Coarctation of the aorta is a congenital heart disease consisting 7% of total congenital heart diseases. Its prevalence in men is 2 times more than that in women. This disease is associated with other congenital diseases. including aortic bicuspid valve, the linkage between two ventricles and arteriole channel It is often seen in the Turner syndrome which may lead to complications su...

• The cause of hypertension in human coarctation of the aorta is not well understood. The proponents of a mechanical hypothesis" suggest that the increase in blood pressure is due to the resistance offered by the coarctation and the collateral circulation, whereas those favoring a humoral explanation" postulate the existence of a generalized increase in peripheral resistance such as occurs in r...

Twenty patients who underwent resection of the thoracic aorta and six patients operated on for hiatial hernia, patent ductus, mitral insufficiency, or A-V fistula were studied to determine whether there was an increase in sympatho-adrenal medullary activity following resection. Daily 24-hour urine samples were collected from each patient and control, and outputs of noradrenaline (norepinephrine...

Basic hemodynamic studies on experimental coarctation of the aorta just beyond the left subclavian artery have revealed that hitherto unsuspected physical and physiologic factors are involved in creation of hypertension above a coarctation and in changes of pressure pulses below such a lesion. The effects are by no means explained by an increased resistance at the coarctation, as is generally b...
