Linguistic competence is a term we associate with Chomsky (e.g. 1965: Ch 1), who made the distinction between people’s knowledge of language (competence), and that knowledge put to use in real situations (performance). Competence is an aspect of our mental capacity underlying our use of language. Chomsky’s conception of linguistic competence is purely syntactic, while it is a more comprehensive...
Poetic analysis involves the explication of a poem by focusing on the process of semiosis in it. Through semiosis linguistic meaning is transformed into stylistic meaning. An examination of semiosis brings us to look at the hypersemanticized poetic structures which are none other than the style features of a poem. Since style functions in a literary text by conveying meanings other than literal...

This paper presents the syntactic annotation level of a project aimed at providing a small dialog corpus with multiple levels of annotation. The syntactic annotation is based on dependency syntax. We outline the reasons for choosing dependency, and show the syntactic annotation for some constructions. We finish by describing the current state of the project.
This study examined the effects of linguistic task demands on the neuroanatomical localization of the neural response related to automatic semantic processing of concrete German nouns combining the associative priming paradigm with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). To clarify the functional role of the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) for semantic processing with respect to semantic dec...

What is the difference between real stories and fictional ones? This book addresses such questions by describing the conceptual and linguistic underpinnings of narrative interpretation. Barbara Dancygier discusses literary texts as linguistic artifacts, desc...
