Ziehl-Neelsen (Z-N) staining of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for acid-fast bacilli (AFB) is the cornerstone of the laboratory diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis (TBM). However, the sensitivity of conventional Z-N staining for the detection of AFB in CSF specimens is suboptimal. The present study aimed to compare the practicality of modified Z-N staining with light microscopy and fluorescence micr...
Background: Gastrointestinal parasites are important health problems among most societies.
Objectives: Prevalence and risk factors associated with gastrointestinal inmates of Port Harcourt children home.
Methods: This prospective study was carried out in August September 2019 at the home. Fecal samples were collected from 63 healthy looking examined macroscopically microscopically (...
If tubercle bacilli could be easily detected in clinical samples with gram staining, it would be possible to detect tuberculosis more promptly and easily, which may contribute to tuberculosis control. In this paper, we present three infective tuberculosis cases in which gram staining easily detected tubercle bacilli before Ziehl-Neelsen (Z-N) staining and diagnosed by polymerase chain reaction ...
We report a rare case of tuberculosis of oral cavity in a 3.5 year-old male who was referred to oral medicine department with a chief complaint of a painless lesion in the oral cavity. Incisional biopsy from the lesion margin depicted histological features of necrotizing granulomatous lesion. Ziehl-Neelsen staining for acid fast bacilli, interestingly, was negative.
A neonate presented with poor feeding, jaundice and hepatosplenomegaly. He was in liver failure with disseminated coagulopathy. Post-mortem liver biopsy revealed discrete granulomas with central necrosis and acid-fast bacilli on Ziehl-Nielsen's stain. The mother had active tuberculosis at delivery. The principal characteristics of congenital tuberculosis are reemphasized in this observation.
To assess the profitability of control schemes for Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (Map)-infection implemented in dairy herds, accurate estimates of its production effects are needed. This study aimed at quantifying the variation in milk yield of dairy cows according to their Map-infection status. The cow-status was determined by combining (i) its testing(s)-result(s) (serum ELI...
The ReaSLR methodology developed for sputum processing is a novel, low-cost, and simple technique that has improved the sensitivity of smear microscopy for the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB). Sample processing consists of rapid liquefaction of the sputum specimen with the ReaSLR reagent, followed by syringe filtration, concentration by centrifugation, and use of the sediment for smear microscop...
Background and Objective: Tuberculosis is still a major health problem, involving about 1/3 of the world´s population. Diagnosis is difficult when we only use Ziehl-Neelson staining. Many cases may be missed. A more rapid and sensitive diagnostic method is necessary. PCR may be helpful. The aim of this study was to compare PCR, Zieh-Neelsen staining and histopathologic findings in diagnosis of ...
Using Ziehl-Neelsen-positive slides collected from tuberculosis diagnostic centers in Burkina Faso, we showed that 20% of 80 spoligotyping-positive DNA samples had a characteristic Mycobacterium africanum-specific genomic signature. This result suggests that M. africanum is still present in Burkina Faso at almost the same prevalence as 15-20 years ago.
Diseases of gastrointestinal parasites remain a major public health concern. This study was aimed at determining the occurrence among patients attending designated tuberculosis clinics in Rivers State, Nigeria. The included Chest clinic, Rumuigbo, General hospital, Ahoada and Meridian hospital. conducted between July 2020 August 2021. Stool blood samples were collected from 1288 participants ex...
