Recently some mycobactin-dependent mycobacteria were isolated from patients with Crohn's disease. These mycobacteria should be very similar to M. paratuberculosis which is closely related to M. avium. The author has investigated the relationship between M. avium, M. paratuberculosis and the mycobacteria associated with Crohn's disease.

Introduction: Non-tuberculous species of Mycobacterium are a large group of Mycobacterium and are widely distributed throughout the world. Increased isolation of non-tuberculous mycobacteria from patients with mycobacteria infections in Iranian laboratories was associated with erroneous and unnecessary drug treatment, so that in some cases isolated strains considered as drug resistant strains. ...

BACKGROUND The combined use of liquid media and solid media is recommended for mycobacterial culture. We evaluated diagnostic performance of combination of BACTEC Mycobacteria Growth Indicator Tube (MGIT; Becton Dickinson, USA) and 2% Ogawa media (Korean Institute of Tuberculosis, Korea) for recovery of mycobacteria. METHODS In September 2007, 1,764 specimens from 1,059 patients were cultured...

PhoP is part of the two-component PhoPR system that regulates expression virulence genes Mycobacteria. The goal this work was to elucidate role in mechanism Mycobacterium bovis, causative agent bovine tuberculosis, displays upon stress. An analysis gene and acidic growth curves indicated M. bovis neutralized external environment by inducing secreting ammonia. We found essential for ammonia prod...

Although CD4(+) T cells are essential for protective immunity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, recent reports indicate that CD8(+) T cells may also play a critical role in the control of this infection. However, the epitope specificity and the mechanisms of activation of mycobacteria-reactive CD8(+) T cells are poorly characterized. In order to study the CD8(+) T cell responses to ...

Responses to four new tuberculins were found to be significantly reduced in 46 patients with rheumatoid arthritis in comparison with a control group of 79. Except for tuberculin itself, the same was found in 111 patients with tuberculosis. In common with patients with tuberculosis and leprosy, those with rheumatoid arthritis did not respond to common mycobacterial (group i) antigen. Three DR ha...

BACKGROUND Mycobacterium-induced granulomas are the interface between bacteria and host immune response. During acute infection dendritic cells (DCs) are critical for mycobacterial dissemination and activation of protective T cells. However, their role during chronic infection in the granuloma is poorly understood. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We report that an inflammatory subset of murine...

Bacteria coordinate assembly of the cell wall as well as synthesis of cellular components depending on the growth state. The mycobacterial cell wall is dominated by mycolic acids covalently linked to sugars, such as trehalose and arabinose, and is critical for pathogenesis of mycobacteria. Transfer of mycolic acids to sugars is necessary for cell wall biogenesis and is mediated by mycolyltransf...
