Phenols are present in the environment and commonly in contact with humans and animals because of their wide applications in many industries. In a previous study, we reported that uridine diphosphate-glucose-dependent glucosyltransferase PtUGT72B1 from Populus trichocarpa has high activity in detoxifying trichlorophenol by conjugating glucose. In this study, more experiments were performed to d...

Volatile compounds from smoked dry-cured ham were isolated by using headspace-solid phase microextraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Samples of biceps femoris were also evaluated for sensory physical and chemical characteristics. Eighty seven volatile aroma compounds of smoked dry-cured ham were identified. Chemical groups identified were aldehydes (35.6%), phenols (34.3%...

Extra-virgin olive oils (EVOO), high in phenolic compounds with antioxidant properties, could be partly responsible for the lower mortality and incidence of cancer and CVD in the Mediterranean region. The present study aims to measure oxidative DNA damage in healthy human subjects consuming olive oils with different concentrations of natural phenols. A randomised cross-over trial of high-phenol...

In studying the anthelmintic properties of certain alkylphenols it became necessary to determine the degree of absorption and excretion of these substances. Although satisfactory quantitative tests for many types of phenols are known and have been reviewed by Gibbs (l), an exhaustive search of the literature failed to reveal any method that was applicable to those p-substituted phenols which ar...

Pretreatment of lignocellulosic materials may result in the release of inhibitors and deactivators of cellulose enzyme hydrolysis. We report the identification of phenols with major inhibition and/or deactivation effect on enzymes used for conversion of cellulose to ethanol. The inhibition effects were measured by combining the inhibitors (phenols) with enzyme and substrate immediately at the b...

Trimethylsilylation of a variety of alcohols and phenols, in the presence of silica chloride, using hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) in solution and under solvent-free conditions is reported. Trimethylsilyl ethers were formed in excellent yields both for aliphatic alcohols and phenols without having an electron-withdrawing group. In addition, SiO2-Cl can be recovered and reused after drying.

Our recent studies nave shown that naturally occurring dietary plant phenols such as tannic acid, quern-tin, myricetin, and anthraflavic acid are capable of inhibiting polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) metab olism and subsequent PAH-DNA adduci formation in epidermis of SENCAR mice (M. Das, et al.. Cancer Res., 47:760-766,1987, and 47: 767-773, 1987). In this study these plant phenols were t...

The analytical potential of tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) as impregnant in the thin-layer chromatographic separation of mixtures of amines, phenols, or metal ions has been investigated. Silica gel impregnated with 0.001 M TBP as stationary phase and an aqueous micellar solution (0.01 M) of CTAB, a cationic surfactant, as mobile phase was found to be the best chromatographic system for achieving i...

The mobilities of 24 potential metabolites of benzo[a]pyrene were examined with high pressure liquid chromatography. Twelve phenols, five quinones, four dihydrodiols, and three oxides were studied. The chromatographic procedure employed allowed the separation and quantitation of benzopyrene metabolites into three major groups consisting of phenols, quinones, and dihydrodiols. Two of the benzopy...

The reported high phenolic levels in sorghum have led an interest from sorghum breeding programs in developing and identifying germplasms with high phenolic levels, which require screening a large number of samples to find those with the highest levels. Since wet chemistry screening methods are slow, expensive, and destructive, the use of NIR calibration curves could be an alternative. The obje...
