Complex adaptive systems (cas) – systems that involve many components that adapt or learn as they interact – are at the heart of important contemporary problems. The study of cas poses unique challenges: Some of our most powerful mathematical tools, particularly methods involving fixed points, attractors, and the like, are of limited help in understanding the development of cas. This paper sugg...
Cognitive diagnostic modeling has become an exciting new field of psychometric research. These models aim to diagnose examinees’ mastery status of a group of discretely defined skills, or attributes, thereby providing them with detailed information regarding their specific strengths and weaknesses. Combining cognitive diagnosis with computer adaptive assessments has emerged as an important part...
This commentary addresses two points raised by Kitson and colleagues’ article. First, increasing interest in applying the Complexity Theory lens in healthcare needs further systematic work to create some commonality between concepts used. Second, our need to adopt a better understanding of how these systems organise so we can change the systems overall behaviour, creates a paradox. We seek to m...
The concept of adaptive user interfaces is a promising solution for providing users with a wide range of individual needs with accessible technology. Developers only have to implement one generic solution to offer a multitude of individually optimised concrete user interfaces. Whereas a lot of technical functionalities and characteristics of adaptive user interfaces are already solved, there is...
In this paper, we provide a general purpose simulation framework for complex adaptive systems. Our framework will deal with a number of important criteria including self-organization, emergence, and others. We then show that the framework can capture the common underlying structure of complex adaptive systems through demonstrating its application in specific biological domains.
For several years, the National Academies has been engaged in a systemic study of the quality and cost of health care in the United States (IOM, 2000, 2001; National Academy of Engineering and Institute of Medicine, 2005). Clearly, substantial improvements in the delivery of health care are needed and, many have argued, achievable, via value-based competition (e.g., Porter and Teisberg, 2006). ...
In this paper, a decentralized group formation algorithm for task allocation in complex adaptive systems is proposed. Compared with current related works, this decentralized algorithm takes system architectures into account and allows not only neighboring agents but also indirect linked agents in the system to help with a task. A system adaptation strategy is also developed for discovering effe...
Artificial, neurobiological, and social networks are three distinct complex adaptive systems (CAS), each containing discrete processing units (nodes, neurons, and humans respectively). Despite the apparent differences, these three networks are bound by common underlying principles which describe the behaviour of the system in terms of the connections of its components, and its emergent properti...
