Background and purpose: Exposure to heavy metals can cause neurological, respiratory and cardiovascular disorders, imbalance of hormones, hair loss, infertility, and abortion. Kohl containing heavy metals can lead to such complications due to long-term contact with the lining of the eye. The aim of this study was to investigate the contamination level of Kohl by heavy metals (cadmium, zinc, nic...

Release of iron from enterocytes and hepatocytes is thought to require the copper-dependent ferroxidase activity of hephaestin (Hp) and ceruloplasmin (Cp), respectively. In swine, copper deficiency (CD) impairs iron absorption, but whether this occurs in rats is unclear. By feeding a diet deficient in copper, CD was produced, as evidenced by the loss of copper-dependent plasma ferroxidase I act...

The role of metallothioneins (MT) in copper homeostasis is of great interest, as it appears to be partially responsible for the regulation of intracellular copper levels during adaptation to extracellular excess of the metal. To further investigate a possible role of MTs in copper metabolism, a genomics approach was utilized to evaluate the role of MT on gene expression. Microarray analysis was...

The accumulation of copper over 2 h by normal lymphoid cells and those from Menkes'-disease patients (Menkes' cells) was found to be biphasic, with an initial phase of rapid uptake, an approach to steady state at around 40-60 min, followed by a further accumulation phase. The accumulation of copper was not diminished by the addition of a variety of metabolic inhibitors, suggesting that copper u...

The demand for new, thermally conducting light weight and anti-corrosive materials is tried by incorporating Copper Oxide (CuO) nano powder in polyethylene matrix material. A laboratory level electro deposition technique is adopted here to prepare Copper Oxide (CuO) nano particles. Their phase composition is confirmed with X-Ray diffraction peaks and verified with standard JCPDS file for Copper...

Pleurotus pulmonarius (Fr) Quélet, produced laccase as the main ligninolytic enzyme when cultivated on solid-state cultures using corn cob as substrate. The addition of copper greatly increased the production of enzyme. The addition of 25.0 mM CuSO4 increased the level of laccase from 270 to 1,420 U.L-1 and the fungus showed high resistance to copper under the conditions used in this work.

A clinical study was undertaken to compare the surface microbial contamination associated with pens constructed of either a copper alloy or stainless steel used by nurses on intensive care units. A significantly lower level of microbial contamination was found on the copper alloy pens.

The Pauli Exclusion Principle (PEP) is one of the basic principles of modern physics and, even if there are no compelling reasons to doubt its validity, it is still debated today because an intuitive, elementary explanation is still missing, and because of its unique stand among the basic symmetries of physics. The present paper reports a new limit on the probability that PEP is violated by ele...

SUMMARY The purpose of this study is to compare the level of zinc, copper and the ratio of zinc to copper in serum of patients who are suffering from acute myocardial infarction with healthy men. In 10 ml blood samples from 45 men on the second day of myocardial infarction and 51 healthy men volunteers matched for age, serum zinc, copper, cholesterol and triglycerides were measured. Zinc and c...
