Blackbody levels of emission in the electron cyclotron range of frequencies have been observed from an overdense (vpe;3vce) Madison Symmetric Torus @Dexter et al., Fusion Technol. 19, 131 ~1991!# reversed field pinch plasma, a result of electrostatic electron Bernstein waves emitted from the core and mode converted into electromagnetic waves at the extreme plasma edge. Comparison of the measure...
A 47-year-old woman presented with extreme hypercalcaemia due to a parathyroid carcinoma. An electrocardiogram which was recorded when the hypercalcaemia was associated with hypokalaemia showed absence of the ST segment, prolonged T wave, a shortened QTac interval and prominent U waves.
A numerical study about the generation of extreme events in lumped Raman fibre amplifier is performed. Evolutions of continuous or pulsed signals are analysed using crosscorrelations, spectra and probability density functions. For pulsed signals, the phase evolution is also explored. Both signal and Stokes cascaded waves are considered.
Climate change poses a significant challenge to all natural systems on Earth. Especially increases in extreme weather events such as heat waves have the potential to strongly affect biodiversity, though their effects are poorly understood because of a lack of empirical data. Therefore, we here explore the sensitivity of a tropical ectotherm, which are in general believed to have a low warming t...
Communities worldwide are increasingly affected by natural hazards such as floods, droughts, wildfires and storm-waves. However, the causes of these increases remain underexplored, often attributed to climate changes or changes in the patterns of human exposure. This paper aims to quantify the effect of climate change, as well as land cover change, on a suite of natural hazards. Changes to four...
In this paper, the modification of Endurance Wave Analysis (EWA) in assessment of offshore platforms based on the new-wave theory is introduced. EWA is a new method to estimate the response of offshore structures in different sea states by use of incremental records. This study is offered practical procedures to select time duration and intensifying trend of the records. In addition, a simplifi...
We investigate the global large amplitude waves propagating across the solar disk as observed by the SOHO/Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT). These waves appear to be similar to those observed in H in the chromosphere and which are known as “Moreton waves,” associated with large solar flares [Moreton, 1960, 1964]. Uchida [1968] interpreted these Moreton waves as the propagation of a hy...
We show that helical turbulence produced during a first-order phase transition generates circularly polarized cosmological gravitational waves (GWs). The characteristic frequency of these GWs for an extreme case of the phase transition model is around 10(-3)-10(-2) Hz with an energy density parameter as high as 10(-12)-10(-11). The possibility of detection is briefly discussed.
[1] Arctic amplification (AA) – the observed enhanced warming in high northern latitudes relative to the northern hemisphere – is evident in lower-tropospheric temperatures and in 1000-to-500 hPa thicknesses. Daily fields of 500 hPa heights from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction Reanalysis are analyzed over N. America and the N. Atlantic to assess changes in north-south (Rossby)...
Giant anomalous events may occur in systems characterized by many waves, with extremely high amplitude waves appearing with a probability much higher than expected for a random dynamics. Such rare, and giant, events are known to occur on the ocean surface and have been named, in that context, “rogue waves”. We present here some recent experimental results on the statistical properties of giant ...
