The speed and accuracy of single movements depend on several factors, such as direction of movement, distance to the target, and accompaniment by simultaneous movements. The relation between speed, accuracy, and distance appears to be determined by the time required to process feedback and to make corrective alterations in the movement. For a repetitive series of movements, there is some eviden...

This study examined the effects of context type on the use of context while lipreading and listening. Results indicate that the ability to use context by type and modality are not global skills, but instead are specific to the context type and perceptual modality in use. Results further suggest that context is more readily used in the visual channel over the auditory channel.

Techniques for developing problem-solving strategies in handicapped children when they are faced with complex perceptual discriminations were investigated. Specifically, the effectiveness of feedback, modeling, and self-instruction were compared with each other and a control condition on a specially designed matching-to-sample task. The task was designed so that the distinctive features of the ...

The extent to which perception and action share common neural processes is much debated in cognitive neuroscience. Taking a developmental approach to this issue allows us to assess whether perceptual processing develops in close association with the emergence of related action skills within the same individual. The current study used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to investigate ...

Evidence that ovarian steroid hormones such as estrogen and progesterone affect cognition comes from studies of memory in older women receiving estrogen replacement therapy and studies of sexually dimorphic skills in young women across the menstrual cycle. Sixteen women (ages 18–28) completed tests of memory (implicit category exemplar generation, category-cued recall, implicit fragmented objec...

Deficits in specific cognitive and psychomotor capacities, such as attention, reaction time, memory, and hand-eye coordination ability are associated with increased crash risk, especially among older drivers (e.g., Anstey et al., 2005). Higher-order cognitive processes are also closely linked with hazard perception skills (e.g., Groeger, 2000). Employing a large professional driver sample, this...
