Vibrio cholerae O1 is the causative agent of cholera and is ubiquitous in the aquatic environment, while V. cholerae strains non-O1 and non-O139 are recognized as causative agents of sporadic and localized outbreaks of diarrhea. Here, we report the complete sequence of a non-O1 and non-O139 V. cholerae strain (VCC19), which was isolated from the environment in Brazil. The sequence includes the ...

We analyzed the prevalence and characteristics of Vibrio parahaemolyticus among patients with acute infectious diarrhea in the southern coastal region of China. V. parahaemolyticus was the leading cause of bacterial infectious diarrhea in this region during 2007-2012. Serotype O3:K6 strains were most common, followed by serotypes O4:K8 and O3:K29.
Two groups of Vibrio strains isolated from Atlantic salmon with 'winter ulcer' were characterized phenotypically and genotypically. The data obtained indicated that each of the two groups represented a new species in the genus Vibrio. The names Vibrio viscosus sp. nov. [type strain NVI 88/478T (= NCIMB 13584T)] and Vibrio wodanis sp. nov. [type strain NVI 88/441T (= NCIMB 13582T)] are proposed ...
Bacterial flagella are extracellular filaments that drive swimming in bacteria. During motor assembly, flagellins are transported unfolded through the central channel in the flagellum to the growing tip. Here, we applied in vivo fluorescent imaging to monitor in real time the Vibrio alginolyticus polar flagella growth. The flagellar growth rate is found to be highly length-dependent. Initially, the fla...
Antigenic Difference Between Polar Monotrichous and Peritrichous Flagella of Vibrio parahaemolyticus
Vibrio parahaemolyticus has peritrichous flagella in addition to polar monotrichous flagella (1, 3, 4, 16, 17; E. Yabuuchi, M. Arita, Y. Takeda, and T. Miwatani, Jap. J. Microbiol., in press), and some differences in the characteristics of these two types of flagella have been reported. Polar monotrichous flagella are a normal type, whereas peritrichous flagella are an atypical, curly type (16;...
Despite that Vibrio spp. have a significant impact on the health of humans and aquatic animals, the molecular basis of their pathogenesis is little known, mainly due to the limited genetic tools for the functional research of genes in Vibrio. In some cases, deletion of target DNAs in Vibrio can be achieved through the use of suicide vectors. However, these strategies are time-consuming and lack...
Background: Vibrio are the main pathogenic bacteria in aquaculture. The flagellin protein C (FlaC) of Vibrio alginolyticus has good immunogenicity and the prospect of potential application in a vaccine. Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the immunogenicity, protective immunity, and prokaryotic expression fermentation of V. alginolyticu...
The in vitro activity of norfloxacin and six other antimicrobial agents was tested against 93 vibrio strains representing the currently described pathogenic Vibrio species. Norfloxacin had excellent activity against all species, with the following MICs for 90% of the strains: 0.016 micrograms/ml for Vibrio cholerae (including tetracycline-resistant V. cholerae O1 strains), 0.25 micrograms/ml fo...
This is a retrospective study on Vibrio spp. isolated from patients with diarrhea (both inpatients and outpatients) at Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand from January 1994 to December 2001. Of the 33,334 fecal specimens sent for culture, 2,229 (6.68%) were positive for pathogenic bacteria. The most commonly isolated bacteria was Vibrio (1,183 of 2,229 isolates, 53%). Of these 1,183 isolates, t...
