A reaction of biomass-derived aldehyde synringaldehyde and half an equivalent 1,4-dichlorobut-2-yne was attempted in order to obtain a bis-aldehyde with alkyne spacer. The carried out basic media effect bis O-alkylation, as described literature for the preparation structurally similar compounds. Nevertheless, only mono alkylation observed.
High concentrations of aldehydes slow the inactivation of cytoplasmic aldehyde dehydrogenase by disulfiram and also slow the reaction of the enzyme with 2,2'-dithiodipyridine. It is concluded that a low-affinity aldehyde-binding site is probably the site at which thiol-group modifiers react with aldehyde dehydrogenase, as well as being the active site for hydrolysis of 4-nitrophenyl acetate.
A barbiturate-sensitive aldehyde reductase was purified to homogeneity from rat liver and shown to metabolize the cancer-chemotherapeutic antibiotic daunorubicin. The aldehyde reductase may have important roles in the metabolism of exogeneous drugs as well as the aldehyde derivatives of the biogenic amines.
Microbial spoilage of food causes losses of up to 40% of all food grown for human consumption worldwide. Yeast growth is a major factor in the spoilage of foods and beverages that are characterized by a high sugar content, low pH, and low water activity, and it is a significant economic problem. While growth of spoilage yeasts such as Zygosaccharomyces bailii and Saccharomyces cerevisiae can us...
The aldehyde dehydrogenases from livers of the inbred mouse strains C57BL/6J, DBA/ZJ, and the F1 generation of the cross between these strains (C57BL/6J X DBA/2 J) have been purified over 60-fold. Alcohol dehydrogenase activity is not present in the purified enzyme preparation. Enzyme preparations from both strains and from the F1 cross specifically require NAD but can oxidize a variety of alde...
In 1877 Salkowski (1) noted the presence of a reducing substance in the urine of rabbits following the administration of sodium benzoate. Later Magnus-Levy (2) reported that this substance was benzoyl glycuronic acid and stated that less was found in the urine of rabbits than in the urine of dogs and sheep. At the present time it is the general assumption that rabbits detoxicate ingested benzoi...
An analytical method was developed for the accurate determination of benzoic acid in commercial quasi-drug drinks using isotope dilution liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (ID-LC/MS). Sample drinks were spiked with C6-benzoic acid and these mixtures were cleaned by a nylon membrane filter. The sample mixtures were then analyzed using LC/Tandem MS in the negative ion mode without further cl...
In our previous report, benzoic acid and some of its chemical analogues were shown to increase osmotic fragility (OF) in isolated rat red blood cells (RBCs). However, there have been no reports on the effects of benzoic acid and its derivatives on OF in the RBCs of other animals. To clarify these inter-species differences, the effects of those chemicals on OF were examined in guinea pig RBCs. T...
An organic macromolecular residue, prepared from the Murchison meteorite by treatment with hydrofluoric and hydrochloric acids, was subjected to online thermochemolysis with tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH). The most abundant compound released by thermochemolysis was benzoic acid. Other abundant compounds include methyl and dimethyl benzoic acids as well as methoxy benzoic acids. Short chai...
Ring opening of phthalic anhydride has been carried out in acetic acid with glycine, b-alanine, L-phenylalanine, and 4-aminobenzoic acid to yield, respectively, 2-{[(carboxymethyl)amino]carbonyl}benzoic acid (I), 2-{[(2carboxyethyl)amino]carbonyl}benzoic acid (II), 2-{[(1-carboxy-2-phenylethyl)amino]carbonyl}benzoic acid (III), and 2[(4-carboxyanilino)carbonyl]benzoic acid (IV). Compounds I-IV ...
