Hydrocortisone (Kendall's compound F, 17-hydroxycorticosterone, Cortisol) and cortisone (Kendall's compound E, 17-hydroxy-ll-dehydrocorticosterone) have been widely used in medicine for about 20 years, first as adrenal hormones in substitution therapy. Since the discovery of Hench, Kendal, Slocumb & Polley (1949) that cortisone is beneficial against a wide range of rheumatic diseases and agains...

Background: Interleukin (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) are found to be elevated in various inflammatory and malignant diseases and their levels are found to correlate with the extent of the disease. We evaluated the role of adding hydrocortisone to two different anesthetic regimens, on the level of IL-6, CRP and cortisol levels following breast cancer surgery. Patients and Methods: In this...

OBJECTIVE Adrenal insufficiency (AI) is a chronic condition associated with increased mortality and morbidity. The treatment of AI in the last years has been object of important changes due to the development of a dual-release preparation of hydrocortisone. It differs from previous therapeutic strategy as it contemplates a once-daily tablet that allows more closely mimicking the physiological c...

BACKGROUND Glucocorticoid therapy is associated with potentially serious side-effects, but there is no information available regarding glucocorticoid requirement in adult hypopituitary patients with partial ACTH deficiency. SUBJECTS Ten male adult hypopituitary patients with partial ACTH deficiency, baseline plasma cortisol > 200 nmol/l but a peak stimulated cortisol < 500 nmol/l and 10 match...

A body of evidence has suggested that hormones which modulate plasminogen activator production by cultured tumor expiants in vitro may have a qualitatively comparable effect on the growth of the same tumors in vivo. As a test of this correlation and to explore its potential for predicting the in vivo response of tumors to hormones, we have studied here the effect of hydrocortisone on the growth...

The present study aimed to examine the effectiveness of silymarin compared to hydrocortisone on clinical and hematological alterations and organ injury (liver and heart) in a low-dose canine lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced sepsis model. Fifteen clinically healthy dogs were randomly categorized into three equal groups: Two dogs in group A, LPS (0.10 μg kg-1, IV) was injected (control...

Introduction: Post Whipple's Pancreatico-duodenectomy (PD) the major concern is pancreaticojejunostomy (PJ) leak which leads to post operative pancreatic fistula (POPF), pancreatectomy haemorrhage(PPH), delayed gastric emptying (DGE) ,sepsis. sometimes mortality.Hydrocortisone and indomethacin have been postulated reduce pancreatitis thus PJ leak. Methods: Between Jan 2018 - April 2019, 146 pat...

Involucrin accumulation and ionophore-assisted envelope formation, markers of keratinocyte differentiation, were found to be highly dependent on culture conditions in the malignant epidermal keratinocyte line, SCC-13, derived from a human squamous cell carcinoma. In confluent cultures, approximately one-half of the cells were competent to form envelopes when grown in medium without hydrocortiso...

In acute experiments in dogs cortisone and hydrocortisone increase the concentration and output of bicarbonate in pancreatic secretion whereas prolonged administration of these hormones leads to a diminished bicarbonate response. In both acute and chronic experiments, however, cortisone and hydrocortisone produce an increased output of the enzymes amylase and trypsin.
