Detergent extracts of cell envelopes of the gliding bacterium Herpetosiphon aurantiacus formed channels in lipid bilayers. Fast protein liquid chromatography across a HiTrap-Q cation-exchange column demonstrated that a 45-kDa protein forms the channel. The observation of a channel-forming protein suggests that Herpetosiphon aurantiacus Hp a2 has a permeability barrier on its surface.

Recent measurements of nematic-smectic A pressure-temperature phase boundaries obtained in bilayer forming smectic A liquid crystals are analyzed. A thermodynamic model which accounts for the elliptical shape of the phase boundaries and which facilitates determination of the various parameters determining the phase boundary is presented and discussed.

Mouse blood monocytes were induced to proliferate and form discrete colonies of mononuclear phagocytes in liquid culutre. The proliferation of these cells in vitro required a factor or factors present in medium conditioned by L cells. For this class of colony-forming cells, the value of Do to gamma irradiation in vitro was 195 rads.

The pore-forming microcin E492 was purified by solid-phase extraction and reversed-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography. Its molecular mass was 7,886 Da. The entire 84-amino-acid sequence was determined. There is no postranslational modification in the secreted microcin, and the sequence has homologies with the sequence of the microcin colicin V.

Highly dispersed rhodium nanoparticles (1.7 +/- 0.3 nm) prepared by a liquid-phase reduction method were loaded on a solid solution of GaN and ZnO without forming aggregates, achieving improved activity for visible-light-driven overall water splitting when the nanoparticles are coated with a chromia shell.
