Cross-reactivity in the Platelia Aspergillus enzyme immunoassay was evaluated using 120 sera from patients with paracoccidioidomycosis, histoplasmosis, and cryptococcosis. At a cutoff value of 0.5, positivity rates were 50%, 67%, and 50%, respectively. The implications for these findings are discussed.
Technical Appendix Figure. Magnetic resonance image of the right wrist and forearm of patient with paracoccidioidomycosis, Brazil. Diffuse inflammatory infiltrates are shown with signs of tenosynovitis and fluid collections involving the flexor compartment and extending to areas corresponding to fistulous skin lesions. Axial T2-weighted, fat-saturated image showing increased signal intensity ar...
Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), caused by the dimorphic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis (Pb), is the most prevalent systemic mycosis in Latin America. There are few reports in the literature about the disease damages during pregnancy and the consequences to the fetuses and breeding. This study evaluated the implications of PCM during pregnancy on offspring and mothers in Wistar rats. Groups ...
BACKGROUND Paracoccidioidomycosis is an endemic mycosis in Central and South America caused by the thermally dimorphic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. Despite its self-limited course and usually asymptomatic infection, some patients may present with a systemic illness mimicking multiple conditions and thus question the general state of their immune system. CASE REPORT A 28-year-old male p...
Paracoccidioidomycosis is an endemic South American systemic mycosis caused by the dimorphic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis (P. brasiliensis). The main clinical form of disease is pulmonary, but all organs may be involved. We report a case of overinfection by P. brasiliensis in chronic gouty arthritis affecting the proximal phalanx of the right hallux. The patient required proximal amputa...
The present advancement and generalization of oral mycosis is probably due to different factors associated to the progress and development of the countries and the presence of medically compromised patients and immunosupressor therapies. From all these mycoses, oral candidosis is the commonest, but histoplasmosis and paracoccidioidomycosis are also important. The main clinicopathologic and ther...
Paracoccidioidomycosis is the most important systemic mycosis in South America. In Europe the disease is very rare and only found in returning travelers. Here we report on a 56-year-old Spanish missionary with respiratory symptoms but no other affected systems. Diagnosis was made based on serology and PCR for Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.
BACKGROUND Nitric oxide (NO), a key antimicrobial molecule, was previously shown to exert a dual role in paracoccidioidomycosis, an endemic fungal infection in Latin America. In the intravenous and peritoneal models of infection, NO production was associated with efficient fungal clearance but also with non-organized granulomatous lesions. Because paracoccidioidomycosis is a pulmonary infection...
Resistance to paracoccidioidomycosis, the most important endemic mycosis in Latin America, is thought to be primarily mediated by cellular immunity and the production of gamma interferon. To assess the role of interleukin-4 (IL-4), a Th2 cytokine, pulmonary paracoccidioidomycosis in IL-4-depleted susceptible (B10.A) and intermediate (C57BL/6) mice was studied. Two different protocols were used ...
OBJECTIVES Chronic paracoccidioidomycosis can diffusely affect the lungs. Even after antifungal therapy, patients may present with residual respiratory abnormalities due to fungus-induced lung fibrosis. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis of 50 consecutive inactive, chronic paracoccidioidomycosis patients was performed using high resolution computed tomography, pulmonary function tests, ergosp...
