We present methods for drawing graphs that arise in various information networks. It has been noted that many realistic graphs have power law degree distribution and exhibit the small world phenomenon. Our algorithm is influenced by recent developments on modeling and analysis of such power law graphs.
free vibration of sandwich plates with temperature dependent functionally graded (fg) face sheets in various thermal environments is investigated. the material properties of fg face sheets are assumed to be temperature-dependent and vary continuously through the thickness according to a power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. also, the material properties of...
Random networks with power-law distribution of degrees of the nodes have been studied quite extensively in the past few years, at least on a heuristic level. By power-law we mean that the probability of having some degree is proportional to that degree raised to some negative constant power, whose absolute value we call the index of the power-law. Such models seem to have some interesting pract...
This paper studies concentration (i.e. inequality) aspects of the functions of Zipf and of Lotka. Since both functions are power laws (i.e. they are – mathematically the same) it suffices to develop one concentration theory for power laws and apply it twice for the different interpretations of the laws of Zipf and Lotka. After a brief repetition of the functional relationships between Zipf’s la...
As part of a global analysis of deep star counts to constrain scenarii of galaxy formation and evolution, we investigate possible links between the galactic spheroid and the dark matter halo. A wide set of deep star counts at high and intermediate galactic latitudes is used to determine the large scale density law of the spheroid. Assuming a power density law, the exponent, flattening, local de...
A simple model of non-Newtonian creeping flow is used to evaluate classes of rheologies which allow viscous mantle flow to become plate-like. The model describes shallow-layer lithospheric motion driven by sources and sinks. The sources represent spreading ridges while the sinks represent subduction zones; the sources and sinks thus also prescribe the poloidal component of the surface flow fiel...
This study introduces the free vibration analysis of multilayered symmetric sandwich Timoshenko beams, made of functionally graded materials with two edge cracked, using the finite element method and linear elastic fracture mechanic theory. The FG beam consists of 50 layers, located symmetrically to the neutral plane, whose material properties distribution change along the beam thickness, accor...
In a representative Canadian population survey (n=66589) the proportion of accumulated deficits in a frailty index showed a linear relationship with mortality in a log-log plot, such that the mortality rate was a power-law function of the frailty index. Represented in this way, the frailty index readily summarizes individual differences in health status. The exponent and amplitude parameters of...
Use of laminar flow-derived power law models to predict hemolysis with turbulence remains problematical. Flows in a Couette viscometer and a capillary tube have been simulated to investigate various combinations of Reynolds and/or viscous stresses power law models for hemolysis prediction. A finite volume-based computational method provided Reynolds and viscous stresses so that the effects of a...
