This paper explores the impact of professional sports teams and stadiums on the wages of individuals employed in several narrowly defined occupational groups in cities in the United States. The occupational groups examined are among those that proponents of public funding of professional sports claim will benefit economically from these stadiums. Our analysis uses data from the March Supplement...

A graph theoretical model is presented for constructing calendars for sports leagues where balancing requirement have to be considered with respect to the different venues where competitions are to be located. An inductive construction is given for leagues having a number of teams 2n which is of the form 2p in particular. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper presents an enumerative approach for a sports league scheduling problem. This simple method can solve some instances involving a number T of teams up to 70 while the best known constraint programing algorithm is limited to T ≤ 40. The proposed approach relies on interesting properties which are used to constraint the search process.

In this paper we propose an approximation for the Traveling Tournament Problem which is the problem of designing a schedule for a sports league consisting of a set of teams T such that the total traveling costs of the teams are minimized. Thereby, it is not allowed for any team to have more than k home-games or k away-games in a row. We propose an algorithm which approximates the optimal soluti...

In this paper, we consider the problem of scheduling sports competitions over several venues which are not associatedwith any of the competitors.A two-phase, constraint programming approach is developed, first identifying a solution that designates the participants and schedules each of the competitions, then assigning each competitor as the “home” or the “away” team. Computational experiments ...

We consider the break minimization problem for fixing home-away assignments in round-robin sports tournaments. First, we show that for an opponent schedule with n teams and n− 1 rounds, there always exists a home-away assignment with at most 1 4n(n−2) breaks. Secondly, for infinitely many n, we construct opponent schedules for which at least 6n(n−1) breaks are necessary. Finally, we prove that ...
