The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) results from the aberrant or sustained secretion of the antidiuretic hormone. Classic manifestations include water retention, hyponatremia, and hypo-osmolality of the serum. Treatment is aimed at differentiating SIADH from other causes of hyponatremia, determining the underlying disorder, and alleviating the excessive water re...

Response of antidiuretic hormone to chlorpropamide Chlorpropamide has been used to treat diabetes insipidus since 1966,1 but its mode of action is still not entirely clear. There is good agreement that it augments the renal effects of endogenous antidiuretic hormone,2 but it might also cause pituitary release.3 To help clarify this we have measured serial plasma concentrations of antidiuretic h...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Hyponatremia is a common complication after subarachnoid hemorrhage. In this study we investigated the relations among hyponatremia, plasma natriuretic peptides, and antidiuretic hormone concentrations after subarachnoid hemorrhage. METHODS Blood samples for radioimmunoassay measurement of plasma brain natriuretic peptide-like immunoreactivity, atrial natriuretic peptid...

Serum, taken from rats under ether anesthesia after injection of hypertonic saline, contained antidiuretic activity in a concentration equivalent to 1 to 3 millipressor units of pitressin per ml. The active material was retained by a collodion ultrafilter and, on electrophoretic analysis, moved with the beta globulins. Dialysis against 0.2 N acetic acid appeared to dissociate the complex. The a...

We describe a 71 year old man with a neurodegenerative condition who developed chronic inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion and hypothermia resulting in recurrent episodes of impaired consciousness. This combination of abnormalities is attributable to hypothalamic disease and has not to our knowledge been previously reported with clearly documented antidiuretic hormone excess.

SYNDROME OF INAPPROPRIATE ANTIDIURETIC HORMONE SECRETION ASSOCIATED WITH SMALL CELLS LUNG CANCER WITH BONE METASTASIS (ABSTRACT): A patient with a bone metastasis developed a asymptomatic hyponatremia, with all features of the Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion (SIADH). The event was interpreted as a consequence of ADH release due to to primary cancer located in the lungs ...

Central neurogenic diabetes insipidus, syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone, and cerebral salt-wasting syndrome are secondary events that affect patients with traumatic brain injury. All 3 syndromes affect both sodium and water balance; however, they have differences in pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment. Differentiating between hypernatremia (central neurogenic di...
