In the present study, we compared two strains of serotypes O88:H25 and O145:H45 with an enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) adherence factor-positive (EAF+) strain of the classic enteropathogenic E. coli serotype O111ab:H2 for their association with HeLa cells and with biopsies of human duodenal mucosa. Both strains not belonging to the classic EPEC serotype showed virulence properties sim...

In the present study, we compared two strains of serotypes 088:H25 and 0145:H45 with an enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) adherence factor-positive (EAF+) strain of the classic enteropathogenic E. coli serotype 0111ab:H2 for their association with HeLa cells and with biopsies of human duodenal mucosa. Both strains not belonging to the classic EPEC serotype showed virulence properties sim...

Hybrid strains Escherichia coli acquires genetic characteristics from multiple pathotypes and is speculated to be more virulent; however, understanding their pathogenicity elusive. Here, we performed genome-based characterization of the hybrid enteropathogenic (EPEC) enterotoxigenic E. (ETEC), that cause diarrhea mortality in children. The virulence genes isolated different sources South Korea ...

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) strains are important agents of infantile diarrhea all over the world, gaining even greater importance in developing countries. EPEC have also been isolated from various animal species, but most isolates belong to serotypes that differ from those recovered from humans. However, it has been demonstrated that several isolates from non-human primates belong...

This case-control study detected and characterized Shigella and diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) types among Vietnamese children less than 5 years old. In 249 children with diarrhea and 124 controls, Shigella spp. was an important cause of diarrhea (P < 0.05). We used multiplex PCR and DNA probes to detect enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC), enteroaggregative E. coli (EAggEC), enteropathogenic E...

The virulence profiles of most atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) strains are unknown. A total of 118 typical and atypical strains of EPEC serotypes and non-EPEC serogroups isolated from children with or without acute diarrhea who were from different cities in Brazil were examined for virulence-associated markers and adherence to HEp-2 cells, and also had random amplified polymor...

Four of six adhesin-encoding genes (lpfA, paa, iha, and toxB) from Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli strains were detected in typical and atypical enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) strains of various serotypes. Although the most prevalent gene was lpfA in both groups, paa was the only potential diarrhea-associated gene in atypical EPEC.

We report the frequency of the different diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) categories isolated from children with acute endemic diarrhea in Salvador, Bahia. The E. coli isolates were investigated by colony blot hybridization with the following genes probes: eae, EAF, bfpA, Stx1, Stx2, ST-Ih, ST-Ip, LT-I, LT-II, INV, and EAEC, as virulence markers to distinguish typical and atypical EPEC, EHE...

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) strains isolated from hospitalized infants with diarrhea in Thailand were examined for HeLa cell adherence and cytotoxin production. Of 101 strains examined, 56 adhered to HeLa cells in a localized pattern (LA), 27 adhered in a diffuse pattern (DA), and 18 did not adhere. All 56 LA EPEC strains were O:K serotype O119:K69. A total of 20 (83%) of 24 EPEC O...

Forty-nine typical and atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) strains belonging to different serotypes and isolated from humans, pets (cats and dogs), farm animals (bovines, sheep, and rabbits), and wild animals (monkeys) were investigated for virulence markers and clonal similarity by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and multilocus sequence typing (MLST). The virulence marker...
