We report three cases of ciguatera fish poisoning. One patient died secondary to respiratory failure. Two patients showed elevated muscle enzymes and one patients had an abnormal cervical spinal MRI. Histamine-producing bacteria are responsible for scombrotoxin (histamine) fish poisoning, a leading cause of fish poisoning in the United States. We report here the draft genome sequences of four histamine-producing (HP) Photobacterium kishitanii strains and nine HP Photobacterium angustum strains isolated from tuna.

We report the case of a 51-year old woman who developed headache, nausea, palpitations, tachycardia and hypertension 30 minutes after eating a tuna fish salad. Elevated histamine levels in the salad helped to confirm a suspected diagnosis of scombroid poisoning. The signs, symptoms, pathophysiology and management of poisoning from spoiled scombroid fish are discussed.
