The ultimate goal of stochastic modelling in shop scheduling is to select the sequence with the best statistical distribution and use it to book capacity and quote delivery dates. For tractability reasons, stochastic models usually employ the expected value of the makespan as the criterion (instead of really looking at the whole distribution). In practice, this criterion is much harder to satis...
Even though a very large number of solution methods has been developed for the jobshop scheduling problem, the majority are designed for the makespan criterion. In this paper, we propose a general approach for optimizing any regular criterion in the job-shop scheduling problem. The approach is a local search method that uses a disjunctive graph model and neighborhoods generated by swapping crit...
A hybrid genetic algorithm is proposed in this paper to minimize the makespan and the total flowtime in the no-wait flowshop scheduling problem, which is known to be NP-hard for more than two machines. The Variable Neighborhood Search is used as an improvement procedure in the last step of the genetic algorithm. First, comparisons are provided with respect to several techniques that are represe...
A batch processing machine can simultaneously process several jobs forming a batch. This paper considers the problem of scheduling jobs with non-identical capacity requirements, on a single-batch processing machine of a given capacity, to minimize the makespan. The processing time of a batch is equal to the largest processing time of any job in the batch. We present some dominance properties fo...
SCRAM: scalable collision-avoiding role assignment with minimal-makespan for formational positioning
Teams of mobile robots often need to divide up subtasks efficiently. In spatial domains, a key criterion for doing so may depend on distances between robots and the subtasks’ locations. This paper considers a specific such criterion, namely how to assign interchangeable robots, represented as point masses, to a set of target goal locations within an open two dimensional space such that the make...
We deal here with a multi-machine scheduling problem with non idling constraints, i.e constraints which forbids the interruption of the use of the processors. We reformulate the problem, while using specific pyramidal profile functions, next get a min-max feasibility criterion and finally derive exact polynomial algorithms for both the feasibility problem and the makespan optimization problem.
This paper describes a methodology of automatic genetic algorithm parameters adjustment dedicated to a job-shop problem with a no-wait constraint with a makespan criterion. The numerical results show that in a given problem, the efficiency of an algorithm with auto-tuning is placed at the level of an algorithm steered in a classical way with the best-fit steering parameters.
In this paper, we considered solving approaches to flexible job shop problems. Makespan is not a good evaluation criterion with overlapping in operations assumption. Accordingly, in addition to makespan, we used total machine work loading time and critical machine work loading time as evaluation criteria. As overlapping in operations is a practical assumption in chemical, petrochemical, and gla...
We are interested here in new sub cases for which permutation flow shop schedules are dominant while considering the classical flow shop scheduling problem and the makespan criterion. To obtain these sub cases, we introduce conditions on the lower and upper bounds of the processing times. These conditions can be quite realistic when the corresponding line is balanced.
