This paper presents the results of preliminary investigations of globular moss growth on the surface of Falljökull, a temperate outlet glacier of the Vatnajökull ice cap, Southern Iceland. Supraglacial debris has provided a basis for moss colonisation and several large (>500m) patches of moss growth (Racomitrium spp.) are observed on the surface of the glacier. Each area of moss-colonised supra...

tissue culture is one of the common methods for propagation of apple clones. however, low survival and poor growth of these plants, after transplanting, limit the widespread use of this technique. the success rate of this method can be increased by using bioagents such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (amf). in this study, effect of mycorrhizal symbiosis and culture media on growth and establish...

Extended Abstract Introduction: Today, seed priming is widely used to improve seed germination in a wide range of plant species. As a result of seed pre-treatment, several molecular and biochemical changes occur, including increased macromolecule synthesis, enzyme activity and formation of different metabolites. Enzymatic and metabolic activities, synthesis of proteins in quantitative and qual...

For analysing element input into ecosystems and associated risks due to atmospheric deposition, element concentrations in moss provide complementary and time-integrated data at high spatial resolution every 5 years since 1990. The paper reviews (1) minimum sample sizes needed for reliable, statistical estimation of mean values at four different spatial scales (European and national level as wel...

Future climate will alter the soil cover of mosses and snow depths in the boreal forests of eastern Canada. In field manipulation experiments, we assessed the effects of varying moss and snow depths on the physiology of black spruce (Picea -mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) in the boreal black spruce forest of western Québec. For 1 year, naturally regenera...

We present new measurements of the time variability of intensity, Doppler and non-thermal velocities in moss in an active region core observed by the EUV Imaging Spectrometer on Hinode in 2007, June. The measurements are derived from spectral profiles of the Fexii 195 Å line. Using the 2′′ slit, we repeatedly scanned 150′′ by 150′′ in a few mins. This is the first time it has been possible to m...

This paper presents a multi-objective cell formation problem considering alternative process routes and machine utilization. Three conflicting objectives, namely 1) minimizing the total cost consisting inter-cell movements, procurement, operation and maintenance 2) maximizing the total machine utilization in the manufacturing system 3) minimizing the deviation levels between the cell utilizatio...

Acetylcholine was identified and quantified by g.l.c. in moss callus. The acetylcholine concentrations in the moss callus were found to be regulated by phytochrome. The highest concentrations of acetylcholine occurred after irradiation with red light. Moss callus grown in the dark contained no acetylcholine.

In vascular plants, strigolactones (SLs) are known for their hormonal role and for their role as signal molecules in the rhizosphere. SLs are also produced by the moss Physcomitrella patens, in which they act as signaling factors for controlling filament extension and possibly interaction with neighboring individuals. To gain a better understanding of SL action at the cellular level, we investi...

Road traffic emits a cocktail of pollutants that can influence the vegetation and plant diversity in neighboring areas. However, the recovery potential of bryophytes after traffic abandonment is still little explored. In addition, the effects of the main pollutants of road verges, such as metals and salinity, on moss flora need to be investigated. In our study, we compared the moss richness and...
