While most epileptic patients respond to treatment with existing antiepileptic drugs, there remains a considerable number of patients in whom these drugs do not suffice. Such patients, particularly children, are often treated using the ketogenic diet. This diet imposes a strict limit on carbohydrates; while providing for adequate protein, most of the calories are supplied as triacylglycerol, mu...

In the title compound, C(13)H(12)N(2)S·C(3)H(6)O, the phenyl rings of the thio-urea mol-ecule are in syn and anti positions in relation to the C=S bond. Two mol-ecules are connected by N-H⋯S=C hydrogen bonds into a centrosymmetric dimer. An additional N-H⋯O=C hydrogen bond to the acetone solvent mol-ecule and some weak C-H⋯π inter-actions reinforce the crystal structure.

A gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method for determination of ketone bodies (β-hydroxybutyrate, acetone, and acetoacetate) in blood is presented. The method is based on enzymatic oxidation of D-β-hydroxybutyrate to acetoacetate, followed by decarboxylation to acetone, which was quantified by the use of headspace GC-MS using acetone-(13)C(3) as an internal standard. The developed me...

Fluorescent carbon dots (NSCDs) with a size of ∼5 nm (λex = 320 nm and λem = 386 nm) have been synthesized under reflux from an alkaline mixture of dopamine and cysteine. The synthesized NSCDs are hybridized with in situ generated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) obtained by mixing AgNO3 at room temperature. NSCDs enrich the plasmonic bands of AgNPs due to the localized surface plasmon resonance (L...

A method to quantify sub-ppm levels of formaldehyde in acetone has been developed and it is reported here. In this method, the different reactivities and stabilities of sulfite with formaldehyde and acetone are used to separate the two carbonyl compounds. Sulfite reacts with formaldehyde to form hydroxymethanesulfonate (HMS), the non-volatile and stable nature of which allows its separation fro...

The penguin wing oyster Pteria penguin whole body extract was obtained with different solvents. The whole body extracts were assayed for antibacterial activity using agar well diffusion technique against human pathogens. The extracts derived from acetone and chloroform exhibited broad antibacterial activity. Highest activity was exhibited against Klebsiella pneumoniae (6 mm) and Staphylococcus ...

Breath acetone serves as a biomarker for diabetes. This article reports 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim][BF₄]), a type of room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL), as a selective sensing material for acetone. The RTIL sensing layer was coated on a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) for detection. The sensing mechanism is based on a decrease in viscosity and density of the [bmim]...

The butanol-HCl spectrophotometric assay is widely used for quantifying extractable and insoluble condensed tannins (CT, syn. proanthocyanidins) in foods, feeds, and foliage of herbaceous and woody plants, but the method underestimates total CT content when applied directly to plant material. To improve CT quantitation, we tested various cosolvents with butanol-HCl and found that acetone increa...

During starvation ketone bodies, acetoacetate (AcAc), 3-hydroxybntyrate (fl-OHB) and acetone accumulate in the body fluids. AcAc and /3-OHB are synthesized in the liver primarily from the partial oxidation of long-chain fatty acids. They are released into the blood as short-chain fatty acids, dissociate to become water-soluble anions and are distributed at different concentrations in the water ...

BACKGROUND The mechanism of a high-fat, low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet (KD) in alleviating drug-resistant epilepsy is unknown but may be related to systemic ketosis induced under this treatment. The need for frequent measurement of systemic ketosis, which is essential for improving maintenance of the KD in patients and for studying mechanism of the KD action, has prompted us to validate the br...
