当院での深頸部膿瘍256例について，45％を耳鼻咽喉科頭頸部外科が，36％を歯科口腔外科が診療を担当した。気道確保を要した36例（14％）は，救急診療科と耳鼻咽喉科頭頸部外科が担当した。気道確保群は年齢層が高く，複数の頸部筋膜間隙に及ぶ例が多く，Streptococcus anginosus類の検出が多かった。気道確保には気管挿管（23例）と気管切開（13例）があったが，両者の抜管までの日数に有意差はなかった。気道確保群での排膿法は経皮的ドレーン留置と切開排膿があったが，入院日数に有意差はなかった。気道確保と排膿の方法は，いずれの方法にも利点があり，時期を逸することなく行うことが重要である。
