Cupric oxide (CuO) thin films are promising materials in gas sensor applications. The CuO-based gas sensors behaved as p-type semiconductors and can be used as part of an e-nose or smart sensor array for breath analysis. The authors present the investigation results on M-doped CuO-based (M = Ag, Au, Cr, Pd, Pt, Sb, Si) sensors working at various temperatures upon exposure to a low concentration...
To assess the toxicity of copper nanoparticles (23.5 nm) in vivo, LD(50), morphological changes, pathological examinations and blood biochemical indexes of experimental mice are studied comparatively with micro-copper particles (17 microm) and cupric ions (CuCl(2).2H(2)O). The LD(50) for the nano-, micro-copper particles and cupric ions exposed to mice via oral gavage are 413, >5000 and 110 mg/...
In this work, Cu₂O nanoparticles were deposited on a carbon cloth cathode using a facile electrochemical method. The morphology of the modified cathode, which was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) tests, showed that the porosity and specific surface area of the cathode improved with longer deposition times. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS...
Copper has an important role in the life cycle of many streptomycetes, stimulating the developmental switch between vegetative mycelium and aerial hyphae concomitant with the production of antibiotics. In streptomycetes, a gene encoding for a putative Sco-like protein has been identified and is part of an operon that contains two other genes predicted to handle cellular copper. We report on the...
Wounding of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) leaves causes systemic induction of a serine-type carboxypeptidase activity. We find this activity to be present in several isoforms. Antibodies raised against the leaf carboxypeptidase inhibited the enzyme activity and the immunoprecipitates were resolved into a 69-kDa polypeptide and a doublet of 35/37-kDa proteins on SDS-PAGE. Immunoblot analys...
Background: Combination of glycation and oxidation is associated with diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to clarify the effect of glycated proteins in presence of transition metal ions on production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in rat hepatocyte suspension. Methods: Glycated albumin was prepared by incubation of bovine serum albumin with 100 mM glucose in 0.3 M phosphate buffer a...
The use of sunlight for photoelectrochemically splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen has aroused great interest in the last decades. Photocathode materials based on cupric oxide (CuO) are promising large-scale, widespread photoelectrochemical due to high Earth-abundance copper, suitable band gap, favorable alignment generation. main challenge development practical CuO photocathodes is enhanc...
Three water-soluble fluorophores are synthesized from 1,3,5-tris-(4'-iodophenyl)benzene. The compound with salicylate groups exhibits a selective fluorescent quenching by Cu(2+)via a static quenching mechanism. The addition of Triton X-100 improves the quantum efficiency of the fluorophore as well as the detection limit for Cu(2+) from 6.49 to 0.19 ppb.
This study represents the first report on the chemical composition and biological activity of Trifolium angustifolium var. angustifolium. The major components of the essential oil were identified as hexatriacontene (23.0%), arachidic acid (15.5%) and α-selinene (10.0%). The main constituents of the fatty acid obtained from the petroleum ether extract were identified as palmitic acid (29.8%), li...
