With the continued shrinking of CMOS technologies and smaller device sizes, soft errors have become of major concern. Since these types of errors do not reflect a permanent failure of the device, they are also called transient faults. Transient faults or soft errors are mainly caused by Single Event Upsets (SEUs). SEU is a bit-flip in digital systems due to the impact of energy particles [17]. ...

abstract target-oriented approaches to translation studies are regarded as recent theories of translation. one of the most famous theories among these approaches is descriptive translation studies presented by toury (1995). this theory gives a new dimension to translation studies and gives importance to the descriptive rather than prescriptive studies. it also identifies three sets of transla...

Bisimulation metrics provide a robust and accurate approach to study the behavior of nondeterministic probabilistic processes. In this paper, we propose a logical characterization of bisimulation metrics based on a simple probabilistic variant of the Hennessy-Milner logic. Our approach is based on the novel notions of mimicking formulae and distance between formulae. The former are a weak versi...

This paper presents empirical evidence for five hypotheses about learning from large noisy domains: that trees built from very large training sets are larger and more accurate than trees built from even large subsets; that this increased accuracy is only in part due to the extra size of the trees; and that the extra training instances allow both better choices of attribute while building the tr...

Utilizing the connection between uniform constantdepth circuits and first-order logic with numerical predicates, we are able to provide a purely logical characterization of uniformity based on the intrinsic properties of these predicates. By requiring a numerical predicate R to satisfy a natural extensibility condition — that it can be translated to a polynomially magnified domain based on tupl...

The NERSC Global File System (NGF) is a center-wide production file system at NERSC based on IBM’s GPFS. In this paper we will give an overview of GPFS and the NGF architecture. This will include a comparison of features and capabilities between GPFS and Lustre. We will discuss integrating GPFS with a Cray XT system. This configuration relies heavily on Cray DVS. We will describe DVS and discus...

Limited preemptive scheduling has been shown to dominate both non-preemptive and fully preemptive scheduling under fixed priority systems, as far as schedulability is concerned. This paper suggests the use of DVS and DMP techniques under limited preemptive scheduling to further reduce energy consumption with respect to a fully preemptive or non-preemptive approach.

AbstructWe combine pruned tree-structured vector quantization (pruned TSVQ) with Itoh’s universal noiseless coder. By combining pruned TSVQ with universal noiseless coding, we benefit from the “successive approximation” capabilities of TSVQ, thereby allowing progressive transmission of images, while retaining the ability to noiselessly encode images of unknown statistics in a provably asymptoti...

We present an extended MPEG video format for efficient Dynamic Voltage Scaling (DVS). DVS technique has been widely researched, but the execution time variation of a periodic task (i.e. MPEG decoding) is still a challenge to be tackled. Unlike previous works, we focus on the data (video stream) rather than the execution code to overcome such limitation. The proposed video format provides the de...

A widely adopted classification of aspectual type is that based on Vendler’s (1967) four-way aspectual classification of verbs into accomplishments, achievements, activities and statives. Moreover, some have assumed, either explicitly or implicitly, that this aspectual classification is universal (see, for instance, Borer 2005, Krifka 1992, Filip 1999). That is, each language has predicates tha...
