BACKGROUND Hyperthyroidism can complicate (mask) the diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) because it increases glomerular filtration rate and decreases body muscle mass, both of which can lower serum creatinine concentrations. Currently, there is no clinical test that can re
Serum osteocalcin levels in hyperthyroidism before and after antithyroid therapy.
Hyperthyroidism is characterized by accelerated bone turnover, caused from direct stimulation of bone cells by increased thyroid hormones. In this study, we aimed to investigate serum osteocalcin levels as a bone formation marker, before antithyroid (propylthiouracil) therapy at
Concurrent sympathetic activation and vagal withdrawal in hyperthyroidism: Evidence from detrended fluctuation analysis of heart rate variability
Despite many previous studies on the association between hyperthyroidism and the hyperadrenergic state, controversies still exist. Detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) is a well recognizedmethod in the nonlinear analysis of heart rate variability (HRV), and it has physiological s
Experimentally-induced hyperthyroidism is associated with activation of the rat hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.
OBJECTIVE Previous studies on the effects of altered thyroid function on the secretion and metabolism of adrenocortical hormones suggest a degree of adrenocortical hyperactivity in hyperthyroidism. We have previously shown that experimentally-induced hyperthyroidism is associated
Smoking and other lifestyle factors and the risk of Graves' hyperthyroidism.
BACKGROUND Hyperthyroidism caused by Graves' disease is common in women, yet little is known about risk factors for the disease. We sought to determine whether lifestyle factors, including smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity level, and body mass index, are risk factor
Effects of hyperthyroidism on delayed rectifier potassium currents in left and right murine atrium
Hyperthyroidism has been associated with atrial fibrillation (AF), however, hyperthyroidism induced ion channel changes which may predispose to AF have not been fully elucidated. To understand the electrophysiological changes occurring in left and right atrium with hyperthyroidis
Oxidation of myosin heavy chain and reduction in force production in hyperthyroid rat soleus Short title: Hyperthyroid-induced force reduction and oxidative stress
ABSTRUCT We tested the hypothesis that a force reduction in hyperthyroid rat soleus muscle would be associated with oxidative modification in myosin heavy chain (MHC). Daily injection of thyroid hormone (3,5,3'-triiodo-L-thyronine, T 3) for 21 days depressed isometric forces of w
New-Onset Atrial Fibrillation Is a Predictor of Subsequent Hyperthyroidism: A Nationwide Cohort Study
AIMS To examine the long-term risk of hyperthyroidism in patients admitted to hospital with new-onset AF. Hyperthyroidism is a well-known risk factor for atrial fibrillation (AF), but it is unknown whether new-onset AF predicts later-occurring hyperthyroidism. METHODS AND RESULTS
Nonlinear analysis of heart rate dynamics in hyperthyroidism.
Studies on the physiology of the cardiovascular system suggested that the generation of the heart rate signal is governed by nonlinear chaotic dynamics. No study investigated the nonlinear dynamics of heart rate in hyperthyroidism. We examined whether the heart rate dynamics of h
Thyroid sonography as an extension of the bedside examination in hyperthyroidism
In this mini-review, we discuss the role of thyroid sonography as a ‘point-of-care’ tool for assessing and managing patients with (suspected) hyperthyroidism who present to the endocrine outpatient clinic. A thyroid ultrasound may aid in distinguishing between hyperthyroidism and
