An analysis of siderophores produced by Magnaporthe grisea revealed the presence of one intracellular storage siderophore, ferricrocin, and four coprogen derivatives secreted into the medium under iron depletion. Structural analysis showed that the compounds are coprogen, coprogen B, 2-N-methylcoprogen and 2-N-methylcoprogen B. Siderophore production under low and high iron conditions was quant...

Benzoic acid, sorbic acid, and sodium lauryl sulfate at low concentrations (5 to 10 mg/liter) each effectively inhibited bacterial oxidation of ferrous iron in batch cultures of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The rate of chemical oxidation of ferrous iron in low-pH, sterile batch reactors was not substantially affected at the tested concentrations (5 to 50 mg/liter) of any of the compounds.

We apply a full-potential first-principles method to investigate the electronic-structure and elastic features of pure iron and ordered transition metal systems like Fe-Ni and Fe-Mn. The martensitic phase transformations in these compounds mainly depend on the properties of iron. Therefore the phase diagram of iron has been studied in detail in view of structural transformations and magnetic or...

The self-assembled (SA) films of imidazole and its derivatives were prepared on the iron surface. The protection abilities of these films against iron corrosion in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution were investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization techniques. The results of EIS and polarization curves demonstrated that films of the imidazole and its derivatives were able ...

Siderophores are relatively low-molecular-weight compounds that typically have a very high affinity constant (1025-1050)1) for iron (Fe3+), which is an essential element for most microorganisms owing to its importance in a variety of biochemical reactions. The role of siderophores is to scavenge extracellular iron from the environment and transport it into microbial cells. Hundreds of sideropho...

Two new coumarin-based "turn-off" fluorescent probes, (E)-3-((3,4-dihydroxybenzylidene)amino)-7-hydroxy-2H-chromen-2-one (BS1) and (E)-3-((2,4-dihydroxybenzylidene)amino)-7-hydroxy-2H-chromen-2-one (BS2), were synthesized and their detection of copper(II) and iron(III) ions was studied. Results show that both compounds are highly selective for Cu²⁺ and Fe³⁺ ions over other metal ions. However, ...

An evaluation of flow-injection analysis with chemiluminescence detection (FIA-CL) to quantify Fe(2+) ((aq)) in freshwaters was performed. Iron-coordinating and/or iron-reducing compounds, dissolved organic matter (DOM), and samples from two natural water systems were used to amend standard solutions of Fe(2+) ((aq)). Slopes of the response curves from ferrous iron standards (1 - 100 nM) were c...

Factors, including pH, temperature, glucose concentration, and iron compounds, affect the activity of plant myrosinase and, consequently, endogenous glucosinolate degradation. These factors also may affect glucosinolate degradation by bacterial myrosinase. Therefore, this study examined the effect of temperature (4 to 21°C), glucose (0.05 to 1.0%), and iron (10 mM ferrous or ferric) on sinigrin...

Differential redox homeostasis in normal and malignant cells suggests that pro-oxidant-induced upregulation of cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) should selectively target cancer cells without compromising the viability of untransformed cells. Consequently, a pro-oxidant deviation well-tolerated by nonmalignant cells might rapidly reach a cell-death threshold in malignant cells already at a...
