BACKGROUND Sentence comprehension requires linguistic processing as well as cognitive resources such as working memory (WM) and information-processing speed (IPS). The authors hypothesize that sentence comprehension difficulty in patients with mild PD is due to degradation of the large-scale neural network that supports cognitive resources during sentence processing. OBJECTIVE To understand t...

Scaling wide-coverage, constraint-based grammars such as Lexical-Functional Grammars (LFG) (Kaplan and Bresnan, 1982; Bresnan, 2001) or Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammars (HPSG) (Pollard and Sag, 1994) from fragments to naturally occurring unrestricted text is knowledge-intensive, time-consuming and (often prohibitively) expensive. A number of researchers have recently presented methods to a...

We present an open-domain QuestionAnswering system that learns to answer questions based on successful past interactions. We follow a pattern-based approach to Answer Extraction, where (lexico-syntactic) patterns that relate a question to its answer are automatically learned and used to answer future questions. Results show that our approach contributes to the system’s best performance when it ...

Résumé. Nous présentons la méthode INSYSE (Interface Syntaxe SEmantique) pour l’annotation de documents textuels. Notre objectif est de construire des annotations sémantiques de ces résumés pour interroger le corpus sur la fonction des gènes et leurs relations de causalité avec certaines maladies. Notre approche est semi-automatique, centrée sur (1) l’extraction d’informations lexico-syntaxique...

In line with the increasing interest in fine-grained modular linguistic representations, we investigate the plausibility of exploiting shared and non-shared portions of grammars for the systematic and efficient development of grammatical resources for multiple languages. We use a new systematic structuring of well-known phenomena form Slavic morphosyntax to illustrate our approach to the design...

In this paper, we focus on chunking including contiguous multiword expression recognition, namely super-chunking. In particular, we present different strategies to improve a superchunker based on Conditional Random Fields by combining it with a finite-state symbolic super-chunker driven by lexical and grammatical resources. We display a substantial gain of 7.6 points in terms of overall accuracy.

We describe our system for the translation task of WMT 2010. This system, developed for the English-French and FrenchEnglish directions, is based on Moses and was trained using only the resources supplied for the workshop. We report experiments to enhance it with out-of-domain parallel corpora sub-sampling, N-best list post-processing and a French grammatical checker.

This paper presents an analysis conducted on a corpus of software instructions in French in order to establish whether task structure elements (the procedural representation of the users' tasks) are alone sufficient to control the grammatical resources of a text generator. We show that the construct of genre provides a useful additional source of control enabling us to resolve undetermined cases.
