We present measurements of the orientation theta0(t) of the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in cylindrical cells of aspect ratio 1. Theta0(t) undergoes irregular reorientations. It contains reorientation events by rotation through angles delta theta with a monotonically decreasing probability distribution p(delta theta), and by cessations (where the LSC sto...
A (3, 4, 14)-connected framework with complicated distorted triangular magnetic lattices, {[Co(7)(H(2)O)(4)(trz)(8)(sip)(2)]·3H(2)O}(n) (trz = 1,2,4-triazolate, sip = 5-sulfoisophthalate), exhibits continuous field-induced metamagnetic transition from an antiferromagnetic ordering to a ferrimagnetic state at 15 kOe, spin competition at 26 kOe and spin reorientation at 50 kOe, respectively.
It is well known that the magnetic anisotropy in a compressively strained Mn-doped GaAs film changes from perpendicular to parallel with increasing hole concentration p. We study this reorientation transition at T=0 in a quantum well with delta-doped Mn impurities. With increasing p, the angle theta that minimizes the energy E increases continuously from 0 (perpendicular anisotropy) to pi/2 (pa...
When disoriented in environments with distinctive geometry, such as a closed rectangular arena, human infants and adult rats reorient in accord with the large-scale shape of the environment, but not in accord with nongeometric properties such as the colour of a wall. Human adults, however, conjoined geometric and nongeometric information to reorient themselves, which has led to the suggestion t...
Fluidic control is an essential technology widely found in processes such as flood control in land irrigation and cell metabolism in biological tissues. In any fluidic control system, valve function is the key mechanism used to actively regulate flow and miniaturization of fluidic regulation with precise workability will be particularly vital in the development of microfluidic control. The conc...
The reorientation process in a magnetic field in two-dimensional isotropic and XY quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets is shown to occur through the intermediate phase with unbroken continuous symmetry and constant magnetization equal to one third of the saturation value. The same reorientation process is also found in the more complicated classical models.
