Polyamines have been implicated in the intracellular stabilization of DNA. Depletion of intracellular polyamines influences the cytotoxicity of 1,3-bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea and cis-diamminedichloroplatinum II. By means of the sister chromatid exchange assay, it was found that intracellular polyamine depletion can also alter the induction of chromosomal damage by these cytotoxic agents.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of exogenous polyamines, isopropyl ester, 2, 4-D and naphthalene acetamide application on yield and quality of date palm of ‘Kabkab’ cultivar. The inflorescences sprayed with 2, 4-D isopropylester (0, 10, and 20 mg L-1), naphthalene acetamide (0, 80, and 120 mg L-1), putrescence and spermidine (0, 0.1, and 1.0 mM), three or six weeks after pollin...

Maintenance of intestinal mucosal epithelial integrity requires polyamines that modulate the expression of various genes involved in cell proliferation and apoptosis. Recently, polyamines were shown to regulate the subcellular localization of the RNA-binding protein HuR, which stabilizes its target transcripts such as nucleophosmin and p53 mRNAs. The activating transcription factor-2 (ATF-2) mR...

Polyamines contribute to several physiological and pathological processes, including cardiac hypertrophy in experimental animals. This involves an increase in ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity and intracellular polyamines associated with cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) increases. The aim of the study was to establish the role of these in the human heart in living patients. For this, ...

Maintenance of intestinal mucosal epithelial integrity requires cellular polyamines that regulate expression of various genes involved in cell proliferation, growth arrest and apoptosis. Our previous studies have shown that polyamines are essential for expression of the c-myc gene and that polyamine-induced c-Myc plays a critical role in stimulation of normal IEC (intestinal epithelial cell) pr...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Polyamines are mainly restricted to the intracellular space. During focal cerebral ischemia, polyamines are released from the intracellular compartment. Experimental studies have implicated a marked elevation in brain tissue and blood. The aim of our study was to investigate whether the elevation of polyamines in the blood of patients with focal cerebral ischemia correlat...

Heavy metal pollution is a worldwide problem with serious environmental consequences. The objective of the present experiment was to investigate whether arginine as nitric oxide precursor and or polyamines substrate can decrease the destructive effects of oxidative stress induced by nickel contamination in Hyoscyamus niger plant. In this study the effects of arginine pretreatment on alkaloid co...

Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), a ubiquitin-independent substrate of the proteasome, is a homodimeric protein with a rate-limiting function in polyamine biosynthesis. Polyamines regulate ODC levels by a feedback mechanism mediated by ODC antizyme (OAZ). Higher cellular polyamine levels trigger the synthesis of OAZ and also inhibit its ubiquitin-dependent proteasomal degradation. OAZ binds ODC mo...

Flax crop yield is limited by various environmental stress factors, but the largest crop losses worldwide are caused by Fusarium infection. Polyamines are one of the many plant metabolites possibly involved in the plant response to infection. However, in flax plants the polyamine composition, genes involved in polyamine synthesis, and in particular their regulation, were previously unknown. The...

The occurrence and function of polyamines in protein kinase C activation and insulin secretion in mouse pancreatic islets were studied. Determination of polyamines in mouse islets revealed 0.9 +/- 0.3 (mean +/- S.E.M., n = 6) pmol of putrescine, 11.7 +/- 3.2 (8) pmol of spermidine and 3.7 +/- 0.6 (8) pmol of spermine per islet, corresponding to intracellular concentrations of 0.3-0.5 mM-putresc...
