This paper describes a single site, open-label Phase I clinical trial evaluating the safety, tolerability and immunogenicity in healthy volunteers of a herpes simplex polynucleotide vaccine that has previously been shown to enhance immunogenicity and protect against lethal herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) challenge in mice. Five escalating doses of the vaccine, COR-1, were given by intraderm...

Respiratory infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa are a major clinical problem globally, particularly for patients with chronic pulmonary disorders, such as those with cystic fibrosis (CF), non-CF bronchiectasis (nCFB) and severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In addition, critically ill and immunocompromised patients are also at significant risk of P. aeruginosa infection....

Low efficacy of peptide vaccines limits their potential application. We developed a powerful strategy to produce epitope-specific antibodies using peptides. Immunization with novel formula into mice showed target-specific prophylactic and therapeutic effects against tumors. Our strategy will be useful for rapid eiptope screening, therapeutic antibody production and cancer vaccine development.

Apoptosis is a physiological cell death that occurs under normal conditions in major biological processes, including the removal of old, damaged, extra, or harmful cells. It plays an important role in natural evolution, tissue homeostasis, removal of cells damaged or infected by viruses, and removal of immune cells activated against self-antigens. The purpose of this review was to examine the r...

Will there ever be a vaccine to treat cervical cancer? If the number of candidate vaccines is any indication, the answer is yes. Researchers set their sights on a therapeutic vaccine for cervical cancer more than a decade ago when they learned that the disease is caused by a virus. But treatment vaccines targeted at the cancer culprit, human papillomavirus (HPV), have progressed slowly compared...

Dendritic cell (DC)-based antitumor immunotherapy is a promising cancer therapy. We have previously shown that tumor-derived TGF-beta limits the efficacy of the DC/tumor fusion vaccine in mice. In the current study we investigated the effect of neutralizing tumor-derived TGF-beta on the efficacy of the DC/tumor fusion vaccine. An adenovirus encoding human TGF-beta receptor type II fused to the ...

Immunotherapy has increased overall survival of metastatic cancer patients, and cancer antigens are promising vaccine targets. To fulfill the promise, appropriate tailoring of the vaccine formulations to mount in vivo cytotoxic T cell (CTL) responses toward co-delivered cancer antigens is essential. Previous development of therapeutic cancer vaccines has largely been based on studies in mice, a...

glutamate-mediated excitotoxicity and neurodegeneration have been shown as pathophysiological hallmarks of multiple sclerosis (ms) and other autoimmune inflammatory cns disorders. n‑methyl‑d‑aspartate (nmda) receptors play a pivotal role in the mediation of neuronal glutamate excitotoxicity leading to cellular damage and apoptotic cell death. current treatment approaches targeting glutamate exc...

goldfish carassius auratus were subjected to either formalin (250 ppm) or nacl (10 ppt), over a 0.5-h period followed by 24-h freshwater exposure. serum biochemistry was monitored before exposure (0), immediately after (0.5) plus 3 and 24 h after exposure. results showed that both formalin and nacl treatments caused rapid increase in cortisol with a peak at 3 h, which did not recover until 24 h...
