In this paper, an optimization method is used for solving a fractional optimal control problem with significant applications in chemical engineering. The considered optimal control is the control system of the isothermal continuous stirred tank reactors. The Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative is used to describe the mathematical model of control system.  For solving the fractional optimal ...

Nature–inspired algorithms are the most powerful algorithms for optimization problems. This paper presents a novel optimization channel allocation algorithm inspired by the flash pattern of fireflies that allows suppression of the four–wave mixing (FWM) crosstalk while maintaining channel bandwidth. It is composed of a fractional bandwidth channel allocation algorithm by using the concept of Op...

A new class of matrix support functionals is presented which establish a connection between optimal value functions for quadratic optimization problems, the matrix-fractional function, the pseudo matrix-fractional function, and the nuclear norm. The support function is based on the graph of the product of a matrix with its transpose. Closed form expressions for the support functional and its su...

In this paper we investigate the sub-channel assignment and power control to maximize the total sum rate in the uplink of two-cell network. It is assumed that there are some sub-channels in each cell which should be allocated among some users. Also, each user is subjected to a power constraint. The underlying problem is a non-convex mixed integer non-linear optimization problem which does not h...

This paper addresses the problem of minimizing a sum of fractional functions over a convex set, where each fractional function is described by the ratio between a convex and a concave function. Linear-fractional programming problems fall into this category as important special cases. Two global optimization algorithms based on a suitable reformulation of the problem in the outcome space are pro...

Second-order cone programming (SOCP) problems are convex optimization problems in which a linear function is minimized over the intersection of an affine linear manifold with the Cartesian product of second-order (Lorentz) cones. Linear programs, convex quadratic programs and quadratically constrained convex quadratic programs can all be formulated as SOCP problems, as can many other problems t...

In this paper a multilevel programming problem, that is, three level programming problem is considered. It involves three optimization problems where the constraint region of the first level problem is implicitly determined by two other optimization problems. The objective function of the first level is indefinite quadratic, the second one is linear and the third one is linear fractional. The f...

A double-loop iterative method is proposed to design allpass variable fractional-delay (VFD) digital filters basing on the minimization of root-mean-squared group-delay error. In the inner loop, an iterative quadratic optimization is proposed to replace the original nonlinear optimization for the minimization of root-mean-squared group-delay error, while an iterative weighting-updated technique...

In this paper, we consider minimizing the ratio of two indefinite quadratic functions subject to two quadratic constraints. Using the extension of Charnes– Cooper transformation, we transform the problem to a homogenized quadratic problem. Then, we show that, under certain assumptions, it can be solved to global optimality using semidefinite optimization relaxation.

This study has been inspired by the paper "An efficient 3D topology optimization code written in MATLAB” written by Liu and Tovar (2014) demonstrating that SIMP-based three-dimensional (3D) topology optimization of continuum structures can be implemented in 169 lines of MATLAB code. Based on the above paper, we show here that, by simple and easy-to-understand modificati...
