BACKGROUND A 39-base-pair sequence (Pu39WT) located 58 to 19 base pairs upstream of the Bcl-2 P1 promoter has been implicated in the formation of an intramolecular mixed G-quadruplex structure and is believed to play a major role in the regulation of bcl-2 transcription. However, an extensive functional exploration requires further investigation. To further exploit the structure-function relati...

Genes encoding an ATP-binding cassette transporter system involved in hemin iron utilization from Corynebacterium ulcerans were cloned and characterized. The genes are homologous to a hemin transport system previously identified in Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Disruption of the hmuT gene, which encodes the putative hemin receptor, resulted in greatly reduced ability of C. ulcerans to use hemin ...

Corynebacterium diphtheriae utilizes hemin and hemoglobin (Hb) as iron sources during growth in iron-depleted environments, and recent studies have shown that the surface-exposed HtaA protein binds both hemin and Hb and also contributes to the utilization of hemin iron. Conserved (CR) domains within HtaA and in the associated hemin-binding protein, HtaB, are required for the ability to bind hem...

The earlier work of Keilin and Hartree (1) and the later reports of Ball and coworkers (2) and of Chance (3-5) leave little doubt that cytochromes a and a3 are two different hemoproteins. Comparison of the effect of carbon monoxide, as observed spectroscopically at 605 rnp and in the Soret region, indicates pronounced differences in the extinctions of these components and suggests either differ...

Hemin is a breakdown product of hemoglobin. It has been reported that the injection of hemin improves lipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity in various genetic models. However, the effect of hemin supplementation in food on lipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity is still unclear, and whether hemin directly affects cellular insulin sensitivity is yet to be elucidated. Here we show that hemin...

under prolonged diabetic conditions, hba1c is produced from normal hemoglobin (hba0) through a non-enzymatic glycosylation or glycation, a process which enhances the hemoglobin susceptibility to be auto-oxidized to methemoglobin (methb). here we are reporting that the non-enzymatic reaction between fructose and methb (methb fructation) induces significant changes in the globin structure and deg...

Halloysite is naturally occurring nanotubular clay with a phyllosilicate structure and widely used as solid support to modify various redox mediators. We prepared hemin modified halloysite (Hemin/HNT) by simple impregnation method, in which known amount of was dispersed ethanolic solution 1% reacted for 12 h. The resulting pure Hemin/HNT employed electrocatalyst the electrochemical oxidation ni...

Hemin upregulates heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), a stress-induced enzyme implicated in protection from a variety of injuries while its related isoform HO-2 is constitutively expressed. The role of hemin or HO-1 in the pancreas and their potential modulation of pancreatic injury are unknown. We show that HO-1 is induced in pancreatitis caused by caerulein and more prominently in severe pancreatitis ca...

Well supported: stable hemin-graphene conjugates formed by immobilization of monomeric hemin on graphene, showed excellent catalytic activity, more than 10 times better than that of the recently developed hemin-hydrogel system and 100 times better than that of unsupported hemin. The catalysts also showed excellent binding affinities and catalytic efficiencies approaching that of natural enzymes.

Two nonerythropoietic tissues, brian and liver, contain an initiation factor that can overcome the block in initiation of protein synthesis seen in reticulocyte lysates when exogenous hemin is not present. Upon incubation of the brain factor with hemin and removal of free hemin by gel filtration, the factor activity is strongly stimulated. This stimulation shows a concentration dependence on he...
